. Name Races for Various Winners of Local Stakes Arlington and Washington Daily-Features to Be So Designated The daily overnight feature races during the Arlington and Washington Park meetings again will carry names of prominent race horses, but with a more modern touch to the selection of names in many instances. In the majority of cases the races will be named for former winners of stakes at the two tracks. For example, the ,000 opening day feature on Monday, June 19, at six furlongs, will be named in honor of Woolford Farms Signator, who himself may be a starter in the race. The son of Insco, now six years old, was the champion sprinter of the 1943 season, his victories including the Northwestern, Clang, Chicago and Home-wood handicaps at Washington Park. It is planned to start with the 1943 stake winners in selecting names for the daily features, working backward year by year, also giving appropriate consideration to age, sex and distance in the use of names. Arlington and Washington Parks began the custom of naming daily races for famous horses in 1940 and has continued the practice since. Racing secretary Webb Everett decided this year to use some of the more modern names because the greater part of the public is more familiar with the winners of recent stakes than with even some of the most famous horses of the past. But some of the famous names are preserved in a more substantial manner in some of the Arlington-Washington stakes, such names as Equipoise, Princess Doreen, Myrtlewood, Cleopatra and Dick Welles. The ,000 Signator Purse on opening day, aside from being a top-notch event in its own right, also will serve as a tune-up for some of the candidates for the Equipoise Mile on the first Saturday, June 24. In fact, many of the "name" races will be preliminaries to subsequent stakes.
