April 19.— The American Red Cross, an annual beneficiary from i racing at Churchill Downs, will receive the ] entire proceeds from the combined Keene- i land-Churchill Downs six-day War Relief ] meeting, to be staged next week. Charles « W. Middleton, chairman of special events for the Louisville Red Cross chapter, an- 1 nounced today. The organization received 0,000 from one day of racing at the 1943 i spring meeting, and further contributions were made by "Downs officials and per- , i sonnel. horsemen and others associated | with racing. The week of War Relief consists of three days Keeneland set aside from its regular season of 10 days and three days Churchill Downs is giving up of its original 21 -day season. In making the announcement after a conference with Col. Matt J. Winn, | president of Churchill Downs. Inc.. Middle-ton said the organization will receive the tracks entire racing proceeds with only the purses and salaries of mutuel clerks : deducted. A gala wind-up is being planned by Red Cross leaders on Saturday, April 29, when , the Clark Handicap will have its seventieth running. A check for the entire amount 1 raised will be presented to a representative of the Red Cross just before the running of the Kentucky Derby. The race arrangements are expected to complete the Red | Cross drive for 57,000, which is 5,100 short of that goal.
