Ky.. April 19.— Derby-towns aspiring "Regret ". Harriet Sue. made a propitious seasonal debut at Churchill Downs here this balmy afternoon, as she •galloped off with Keenelands ,000 added Ashland Stakes of six furlongs before an enthusiastic audience of 7.000. The light-footed brown daughter of Bull Lea — Bay Servant was one of the shortest priced choices of the 1944 turf season to date and paid .60 after all but annihilating f out-presumptuous rivals of her age and sex. They had her in close quarters at the far corner, but jockey Jess Higley eased her back and moved to the outside, recklessly making his run around three of the field on the turn and sauntering away from them with arrogant leisureliness through the stretch, finally winning by three and a half lengths at the direct expense of Darby Dans Darby Delilah. The latter outfinished Hal Price Headleys Paddle by a length and a half for the place and Gal-lahue was fourth. The only other starter was Letmenow, Paddles running mate. Backed to Exclusion of Others Harriet Sue earned ,275 in her successful sally. She, incidentally, won eight races in 1943 competition, the largest number credited to a member of that age division. Her showy form of the Ashland was especially popular with the customers for she not only was backed to the exclusion of the others, but was reared at owner-breeder Hyman Friedbergs farm on the banks of the beautiful Ohio", near here. After completing the distance of the stake in 1:1145, best time for the race either here or at Lexington. Harriet Sue galloped around the turn to seven furlongs in l:26l 5. and jogged out a mile in 1:413.-,. In addition to being eligible for the Derby, Harriet Sue is a candidate for the Blue Grass Stakes of 0,000 next Wednesday. As you might suppose from the time of the feature, the track was as favorable as the weather. The attendance was noticeably large for an "off day" and wagering commensurately brisk, though several winners came from unexpected sources. Harriet Sue did not get to the front in the Ashland until the field entered the stretch, but she was always the aggressor. Going away from the gate she was sandwiched by the Headley fillies and Darby Delilah, while Higley made no effort to outrun them. This quartet skipped down to the far turn heads and necks apart. At that juncture they pinched Harriet Sue a trifle and she was eased back, moving to the outside swinging for home. At the hot corner, she shot past Darby Delilah and Paddle as if they were tied to the fence and moved grandly off to a con- vincing margin. Darby Delilah finally out- lasted Paddle for the place j I i j I i ! I 1 ;j j •|
