McLaughlin Colt In Route Event at Detroit FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 31. — Three outstanding attractions are scheduled for decision tomorrow at the Woodward Avenue racing grounds — the 0,000 Cavalcade Handicap, the ,000 Border City Handicap, and the Bell Buzzer Purse. The Cavalcade will match nine of the better three-year-olds at one mile and one-sixteenth, the Border City is to bring together five top class sprinters, three-year-olds and upward, and the Bell Buzzer is a five-furlong dash for two-year-olds. Nine speedy youngsters have been named to contest the latter event. The half-holiday card, coming right after a very good Memorial Day program, gives Motor City thoroughbred followers a week-end of excellent sport. R. S. McLaughlins Wee Admiral, a Canadian invader, has been assigned top weight of 120 pounds for the Cavalcade, and his stablemate, Hyper helio, gets in the route test under 114 pounds. Although Wee Admiral was unplaced in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes he has shown occasional flashes of class that stamp him a dangerous contender for major honors in the Cavalcade. Hyperhelio turned in several good performances during his two-year-old campaign and is accorded an outside chance in the Saturday three-year-old feature. Ran Impressive Race in Derby David Fergusons locally-owned Bob Murphy, who won the 1946 renewal of the Arkansas Derby, and ran an impressive race in the Kentucky Derby, is to shoulder 116 pounds in the Cavalcade. Bob Murphy comes to Detroit after his recent game victory in the Au Revoir Purse, closing day headliner at Churchill Downs, and he may prove the colt to whip under the very capable handling he should receive from jockey Willie Balzaretti. Hines Pet-rose Girl, 106 pounds; Kurkjian and Dilgers Broom Ride, 106; S. I. Crews useful Castel Beau, 111; Mrs. B. Hernandez Riskaire, 106; Rivermont Ranchs River Pat, 110, and Mrs. George C. Whites Bright Steel, imposted with 110 pounds. Of this latter group, Castel Beau, River Pat and Bright Steel are favorably weighted and any of these might upset some of the better-regarded eligibles. W. L. Huntleys Umpydan, who raced to a clever accounting in the 0,000 Boots and Saddle Handicap here on inaugural day, will meet tough competition in the Border City and he is to race under 111 pounds. George Wallace, who piloted the Huntley star in the opening day attraction, again is to be at the reins on Umpydan. Equal top weights for the Border City fell to T. D. Buhls Crack Reward and Mrs George C. Whites Diamond Dick, each of these crack speedsters being burdened with 115 pounds. Albert Wellmans Many Lands, 113; pounds, and R. S. McLaughlins Vice Admiral. 105 pounds, complete the field for the Border City. The Bell Buzzer will give Michigan patrons a line on some of the better juveniles on hand for the 1946 season. Etnom and Elbekay raced smartly during winter and spring campaigns and they are the hopes of J. A. Kinard, Jr., and Mrs. L. B. Kinard. Mrs. Frederick Sharpe and M. C. Haddix will have a useful Bell Buzzer entry in Little Sting and Photo Light, while Henry Forrest will saddle Merry Mary and Rembird. Rivermont Ranchs River Scotch, A. F. Walls Halcyon Air, and R. S. McLaughlins Imperator round out the prob able starting band for the two-year-old attraction. Novice riders are to get another chance in the six-furlong opener, which is for four-year-olds and upward. Three - year - olds clash in the second race at a like distance, and four-year-olds and upward go in the third race, also at three-quarters. Four-year-olds and upward are to contest the sixth and eighth races at one mile and one-sixteenth. Post time for the initial offering on the Saturday program will be 2:15 p. m.
