Phidias, Eight Others Clash in Constitution Todays Suffolk Stake Preview For 5,000 Yankee Handicap SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 31. — A high class week-end program is scheduled for Suffolk Downs tomorrow with interesting contests slated for decision in the eleventh running of the 0,000 Constitution Handicap, one mile event for three-year-olds which is annually a preview for the 5,000 Yankee Handicap here next Saturday, and the Brighton and Winthrop Handicaps, two ,000 overnight features which drew good fields. The Constitution has a field of nine, headed by William Helis Phidias. The last engagement of this Rosemont colt was in the Peter Pan Handicap at Belmont Park on May 25, when he was right up with the pace in that mile and an eighth affair, won by Mahout, but finished tenth while running with some of the best three-year-olds in the country. Prior to that he turned back a nice field in an overnight Class D event. He is nicely placed at 107 pounds, and the veteran, Herb Lindberg, is scheduled to handle him. Others in the field include Weston W. Adams Gay Moonbeam, Marilyn Stables Laboulaye, D. J. Brosnan and J. J. Halleys Danny J., a winner of two races during the Narragansett meeting, rate an outside chance here. Laboulaye made his last start in the Providence Stakes at Narragansett. He was right with the pace most of the way, tired, but held on gamely to finish fourth. H. G. Bedwells Prognosis won a race at Narragansett and also has a good effort behind Mahout at Havre de Grace which would give him a chance in this field. Gay Moonbeam favors this track and should be some sort of a factor. Morris Wexlers On the River has displayed good form and is rather partial to the mile distance of the Constitution. Although only lightly raced this spring, Reynolds Brothers Wagon Boss has worked well for this engagement. Trainer Lyle Phillips has the Victory Stables Gallong, a highly regarded maiden, ready for a good effort here. The ,000 Brighton Handicap, a six-furlong event for three-year-olds and upward, should produce a tight race as all these sprinters figure very close together. Mrs. Tom Haskos Windmill, J. L. McKnights Agrarian-U, Sam Garfields Shiny Penny, Kenmore Stables Hy-Charlie, and the Little River Stables Johnny Jr., should battle it out for top honors. The ,000 Winthrop Handicap asks a field of three-year-olds and upwards to go a mile and a sixteenth. E. J. Cragins Midway Sun, second to Pellicle in the Providence Stakes at Narragansett; M. A. Tuckers Vassalo, third in the same race, and A. F. Plocks Woodford Lad should make this an interesting race.
