St. Jock and Gothic Take Suffolk Races Prevail in Common and Chelsea Purses; Favorites Fare Poorly SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 31. — After a formful Memorial Day, the favorites had a rough post-holiday at Suffolk Downs today, with the public choices in the co-features being beaten in the final sixteenths of the Common Purse, a six-furlong dash, and the Chelsea Purse, at a mile and a sixteenth. Both events were for Grade D campaigners. The sprint was won by S. D. Sidells St. Jock, while the route event went to Rumstick Lodge, Inc.s Gothic. Both winners, by the way, were second choices of the 21,275 that turned out for the program. In the route event the favorite, Oakhill Stables Boy Soldier, was caught in tight quarters in the stretch run, but as the race was run it was doubtful whether he could have beaten the Chance Shot gelding that came around the turn for home with him. The early pace here was set by Snafu and Towakee, with Hill Sun laying third. Boy Soldier was rated off the pace but at the half-mile pole began to make his move even as Gothic was charging up under the handling of Willie Canning. Coming to the stretch Snafu still was in front, but Boy Soldier and Gothic now were right there and the three charged for home together, with Gothic on the outside, drawing clear and Boy Soldier out-driving Snafu for the place. Hill Sun wound up in fourth place. In the sprint the choice was Bright Signal, owned by Arthur Gaignard, Jr., and the Bien Fait filly went right to the front, followed by Heyorta and. in third place. St. Jock. They came into the stretch in that order, but St. Jock had the most run and he went on to win, with Heyorta also passing Bright Signal to take the place. The Gaignard filly was third and Son of Tarra fourth.
