Jockey Joseph Molbert Injured Fatally in Fall Fails to Fall Clear as Mount Stumbles at Start at Suffolk SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 6. — Jockey Joseph Molbert, 30-year-old rider from New Iberia, La., was injured fatally during the running of the seventh race at Suffolk Downs this afternoon. The Louisiana rider was substituted for jockey George Hettinger, who was originally slated to ride Cary C. Boshamers Carolina Star, a starter in the seventh race. Carolina Star came out of the barrier with the field as they left the post on their mile and one-sixteenth journey, but the ground broke out from under the Boshamer gelding, causing him to stumble, unseating Molbert. The jockey apparently became entangled in his equipment and failed to fall clear of his mount. Close observers say that the horses hooves landed solidly upon the boys chest. The track ambulance was dispatched to the scene immediately and Dr. Wallace, the track physician, pronounced Molbert dead immediately. The body was removed to the first aid room, where it awaited the arrival of the medical examiner. Father Caller, pastor of St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church in East Boston, Continued on Page Two Jockey Joseph Molbert Injured Fatally in Fall Fails to Fall Clear as Mount Stumbles at Start at Suffolk Continued from Page One Mass., administered the last rites of the church. Molbert was brought out in 1938 and, with the exception of the three years, 1941, 42 and 43, which he spent in service, had been riding continuously since. Ironically, the current season was his best to date, he having ridden 16 winners out of 69 mounts for a winning percentage of .23. He was riding for the stable of Robert Cramer and had been here at Suffolk Downs since the meeting opened. During his career, he accepted 2,112 mounts and brought 236 of them into the winners circle.
