Quick Retort Repeats In Suffolk Sprint Test Wheatley Miss Noses Out Silver Crest From C. V. Whitney Stable SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 6. — Quick Retort, a bay daughter of Count Fleet — Slap, owned by the Wheatley Stable, scored her second victory of the Suffolk Downs meeting when she outfin-ished C. V. Whitneys Silver Crest in a sustained stretch battle for top honors in the Sudberry Purse, first of a twin-featured program this afternoon. Well ridden by jockey Charles Mullins, Quick- Retort finished a nose in front of the Whitney filly, who was three parts of a length before J. Lenihans Risk A Whirl in the six-furlong test. The Sudberry, styled for sophomore fillies exclusively, proved an interesting contest from start to finish. Silver Crest was under early pressure to assume command after Wedgemere Farms Bow On took the lead at the five-furlong pole. Clarence Picou, rider of Silver Crest, kept after the daughter of Mahmoud and urged her into a two-length advantage by the time the final bend was reached. Mullins was moving gradually with the Wheatley miss as they straightened for the drive and after disposing of Risk A Whirl set out after the leader. Silver Crest and Quick Retort engaged in a thrilling battle leaving the final sixteenth marker and it M wasnt until a jump from the wire that Quick Retort edged to the front. The second portion of the double bill also turned put to be a thriller as the five contestants in the Cranberry Purse entered the final quarter mile with only a length separating the entire field. W. J. Lenihans September, ridden by Arthur Stone, had the most stamina in the drive and drew out to defeat C. V. Whitneys The Blues by two lengths. Nearly a length back of the runner-up, D. A. Rosenbaums Friendly Frank was third before Arnold Stuart Stables Goldfieid. The other starter was W. I. Lunts Knights Cross. The winners time for the middle distance was 1:44% and she returned a .00 mutuel to the majority of the 13,123 in attendance that made her a lukewarm favorite.
