Sentenced in Swindle LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 7. — John "Jockey" Owens, 48, convicted of taking ,000 from bettors in a horse racing swindle, yesterday was sentenced to prison for five to 50 years by Superior Judge Charles W. Fricke. The judge also dented a motion for a new trial and fixed Owens bail at 5,000 when Owens filed notice of appeal. Owens was convicted May 8 of collecting money from five bettors to place on supposed "fixed" or "jockey races." Some of the top jockeys in racing testified at the trial and all testified that they did not know Owens nor did they know of the ex-sitence of "jockey races."
