Navy Rocket Sets Record WASHINGTON, D. C., May 12 UP. — A Navy "Viking" rocket has roared to a height of 106.4 miles over the Pacific, a new altitude record for American-built rockets, the Navy said today. The rocket was fired yesterday from the deck of the Norton Sound, the Navys experimental guided missile ship. It was fired in the vicinity of Christmas Island. The "Viking" is nearly 50 feet long and 22 feet in diameter. It is propelled by a liquid oxygen and alcohol rocket motor. The Navy said it was the first, time the "Viking" was launched from a snip. ■ 4 i K
