Fifty-Nine Named For Rich Westerner 0,000 Hollywood Stake Draws Crack Sophomores For Its July 5th Renewal HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 24. Fifty-nine three -year-olds, representatives of many of the nations leading -stables, have been nominated for the twelfth running of Hollywood Parks 0,-000 Westerner, racing secretary John Malu-yius announced today. The Westerner will climax the season for thoroughbreds in their age division July 5. Staged at the time of the year when three-year-olds are usually reaching their peak, and run at the traditional Derby distance of a mile and a quarter, the Westerner is generally considered the sophomore championship event of the year in the West. The race was known as the Hollywood Derby for its first seven runnings through 1948. Brookmeade Names Pair . Added to the leading stables of the West who have nominated their top three-year-olds for the Westerner are a number of prominent Eastern stables. Brookmeade Farm of Virginia named Sky Ship and Roaring Bull, while Calumet Farm of Kentucky nominated the quartet of A Gleam, Dixie Lad, Fleet Gird and Recur. Llangollen Farm of Virginia listed Steel, Jenny T, and Next Case. Maine Chance Farm of New York nominated Jet A Dandy and War Fable, and Alfred Gwynne Van-derbilt of Maryland and New York, named Indian Land. Among the many strong western-owned -contenders listed are Allison and Prest-ridges Golden Gate Derby winner, Marcador, H. W. Collins Almighty, Mrs. Gordon Guibersons Arroz, Abe Hirschbergs Halta-fire, Mr. and Mrs. Harry James Big Noise, King and Luellwitz Tiger Sir, Mission Stables Alate and Suzy Q.Ranchs Victory Tower. Top filly stars named for the Westerner include Princess Lygia, A Gleam, Seasons Best, Your Hostess, Nurse O War and Tonga.
