Tommy Root Joins Cy Butler GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 16. — Trainer Jim Arthur has leased the contract of apprentice Tommy Root to Cy Butler at Garden State Park. Root is the 18-year-old son of the veteran saddle-smith, Ralph "Buddy" Root. The youngster rode his first mount, Ann Bonnie, to victory at Bowie on March 20, 1956. His hobby is deep sea fishing and he is especially proud of the time he caught an 80-pound tarpon in Florida waters. Perhaps his pride stems from the fact that at that time the fish outweighed him by 12 pounds.
