D ORANTE WINS THE NURSERY WESTERN COLTS SURPRISING VICTORY IN YOUNGSTER HANDICAP. Nealon Takes Municipal with Ease Brook Cup Chase Goes to Coligny Lawrence P. Daley Scores Again. New York, October 12. Throe splendid turf fixtures, the Brook Cup Handicap Steeplechase over three miles of the stiflest cross-country journey in Vincrlca, the famous Nursery Handicap for two-year-olds :it six furlongs on the straightaway, and the Ions distance .Municipal Handicap, were decided at the I.elmoiit Pari: course today in the presence of a vast throng of 30,0f!0 spectators. Exquisite climatic conditions prevailed and the track -was so good that the fastest time of the present season at the new course was possible. The running of the two stakes for older horses, won so brilliantly and decisively by Coligny and Nealon, proved interesting, but uneventful. Ifotli of these top notchers in their respective spheres of racing always had the measure or their opponents and their victories were achieved with supreme ease. It was reserved for the juvenile event to furnish one of the most unique and spectacular races that has ever been witnessed on any race course in this country and which could only have been possible on j; the absolutely straight course at Belmont Park. For J1 in such a big field, twelve starters, the most amazing a alignment and close order was maintained during ! in the early running, for the pace was tremendously u fast. Notwithstanding every liorse kept his position j. and ran as true as an air line to the final sixteenth, y with tlie possible exception of Fort Johnson, on the n, Ut extreme outside, who seriously bumped the favorite, Incle, almost the entire distance. All the forward- a contending top weights weakened Hearing the finish, 1 and a despised and lightly weighted maiden, in , Dorante, drew out with a rush, and won going away 5n the comparatively good time of 1:133. A vast v sum of money wagers was won on Dorante. Leo Mayer alone is credited with 0,000 winnings. Ceorge Rose and all the big bookmakers lost p large sums. The former laid .Mayer .,000 to ?1"0 h and ,500 to 00 in one bet, and !?:!,000 to 00 ,. and .f 1,200 to 00 in another. Brussell, the of- i finding jockey on Tort Johnson, was disciplined r by the stewards, being suspended and fined both. t A dozen speedy horses of all ages contested the opening dash-of seven furlongs. Lawrence P. Daley l was the favorite and for a time he appeared to be beaten, but at the end of a rapid sprint through the stretch, he got up in time to snatch the ver- diet away from Lad of Langden. Number One was a close third. The real feature of the race was the great speed shown by Bad News in coming from last to a close-up fifth place and tlds old campaigner is evidently ready to do something effective soon. The valuable Brook C.up Steeplechase was a spectacular and well contested race in which only the added starter, Garrett, fell, hut Coligny was an 1 1 easy winner from Jus Straus and Navajo. Sinister showed the way for two miles, but when it came lo the last half mile, there "was nothing to it but Coligny and Jus Straus. The Nursery Handicap resulted in a huge upset in which such cracks as Uncle, Jim Gaffney, Nota-HUlga, Julia Powel and Lady Winifred were unplaced to the rank outsider, Dorante, which, up to This occasion, had been figuring unsuccessfully in races for two-year-old maidens. Last Tuesday he ran fourth to Masque, Lotus Brandt and Ardri in .such a race. But he was in light today, ran like a good one and won decisively from Falcada and Pair Play. Twenty two-year-olds, including many winners, Pt.-irted in the five and a half furlongs dash that was fourth on the card. It proved, easy for the favorite, The Squire. Miller got him into a safe lead early, and after that all he had to do was to come on and win in a canter from Jane Swift and Berry Maid. Nealon. waited on Good Luck for a mile and a half in tliQ Municipal Handicap, then passed by him finite in the style befitting a Suburban winner, and won eased up. It was a fast-run race, and Nealon was capable of great things today. Good Luck himself ran a high-class race and easily disposed f the favorite, Ironsides. Dolly Spanker has shown indications of returning good form of late, and by running a mile in 1:3S Ju the last race of the day, proved conclusively that lie is to be considered In the racing to come. McCarter was an edds-on favorite, and set a terrific pace for seven furlongs, and, exhausting himself in doing it, was finally passed by the two-year-old, Master Robert, as well as the winner. The western filly, Minnie Adams, ran as fast as any of them for three-quarters. Clarence II. Mackay, who returned from Europe this morning, was at the track today. John Brink, a big turf operator of Los Angeles, was a visitor this afternoon. Ed Cole will again act as associate judge at the Santa Anita track. Big Tim Sullivan has notified the layers not to jiccopt any more markers in his name. A well-known physician of Brooklyn owes the ring a considerable slim in wagers made on credit and refuses to pay. Ornn and Ormuz, belonging to W. O. M. Macdon-ough, will be sent to Oakland in A. G. Blakeleys car.
