A line card of seven , races was instrumental in bringing out the largest crowd that Latonias stands have held during the present meeting. The wci-ttier Was cold and threatening, but it did not dampen the enthusiasm ; of the sport lovers. Favorites fared well, and I nearly all of the winners were heavily backed. In the mile and three-sixteenths race, which featured tie card, the five starters ran closely grouped for almost the entire journey, Mousignor drawing out in the last furlong to win by a short margin from Lexoline, the early pacemaker, Carew, taking third place. Centre Shot redeemed her last defeat, when she was defeated by Miss Sain, by disposing of Little Osage in commanding style in the sixth. Little Osage is considered a colt with plenty of class, and , an offer of 0,000 for him before todays race is said to have been rejected by his owners. Centre Shot carried him to the half at a heart-breaking , pace over the slow track, causing him to weaken badly and allow Cloyne to beat him out for second place. After his sorry exhibition, the party having liis purchase in view at such a price can consider himself extremely lucky that he escaped. As a matter of fact, the youngsters in this section of the country arc a bad lot, and worth about a fourth of the value their owners hold them at. Dcutschland gave a good speed exhibition by taking the seven furlong race in rather commanding style from the heavily backed Trite Wing. - After Granada had won the closing race, J. McCullough bid him up 00 over his entered price of 1907.shC0 and failed to get him. V. Powers on popperfield rode an extremely bad race and the judges suspended hint from riding any but his contract employers mounts at the meeting. William Walkers efforts to have Lyeurgus restored to favor has disclosed the fact that the rider in a bad way physically and it would be an in- ; justice lo allow him to ride in Ids present condition. , When fully restored to health Lyeurgus will again be allowed to accept mounts. Captain James Williams Is here. He reports Carthage now resting at Louisville in grand form and wilL be a sharp factor In the racing at Churchill Downs. J. C. Milam has sold his three-year-old Jim Simpson to J. D. Bower, of Birmingham, Ala., for , 1,500. Bower is a newcomer on the turf. L. V. Bellow Is here on his way to Louisville from S New York. He brought Woolstone and Old Hon- i esty back with him. Please and Marbles for Bud , May and Lady Savoy and another one of Gersts. The horses are at Louisville. Bellew has a few liorses scattered at several points and he came home to get them together aud then he will decide where he ip goiug to race this , winter.
