GELDINGS WINNING RECORD , BANQUET AT HEAD OF THE LIST FOR THIS COUNTRY. Raceland, Strathmeath and Salvldere Follow j Last Probably Future Leader Epsom Lad First in England. Some, reference to the money earnings of famous geldings was made in this newspaper recently, and some figures taken from inaccurate compilations were used -without testing. Some question having arisen the careers of Kpsom Lad, Banquet, Race-land and Strathmeath were gone over carefully, and their earnings accurately calculated. The "result in each case was to reduce the gross sums heretofore accredited to them as the net results of their respective careers. While thrs is the case, nil were great race horses and their winnings were sufficiently great to give them all an exalted place in the list of great winners. Comparison of their respective averages per race Is much in- favor of Kpsom Lad, a horse of limited turf career, with the great bulk of his winnings amassed in two great stake races. Similarly, a comparison shows greatly in favor of Salvldere. But when Banquet Raceland and Strathmeath were reaping their harvests, great stakes of high value were limited in number as compared with the present time, and a horse of their class has. now a much greater opportunity to pile up a big total of earnings without having to race anywhere near so many times as they did. The complete records of the four great money-earning geldings referred to are given in detail here, as is also, for contrast ami comparison, the record to date of the great gelding of the present time, . Salvldere. They cannot fail to interest Students of turf lore. Banquet 1887, b. g, by Rayon d Or Ella T. Banquet was a notably gallant gelding the bravest of the brave and his wind-up as a London cab horse was a blot on the late Mike Dwycrs racing career. Banquet raced notably for ten "seasons here and in England, and won sixty-two races and 18,535. He did great things in his six American years, and was a hardy, consistent race horse, of great endurance and speed, not much to look at, but an equine doer of great deeds. His career liotb here and in England during ten seasons is shown in the table below: A- s,s- 1st. 2d. .Id. Unp. Raceland 1885, b. g, by Billot Calomel. In the fall of 1SS0, while at Lexington, .Toe Ull-innn bought a yearling at auction. He did not particularly want a yearling, but chancing to bid on one by Billet Calomel, acquired ownership for 1 5205, and concluded to retain him and have him 1 trained. It was a fortunate conclusion. The year- 1 ling was gelded, was given the name of Raceland 1 and the next year won nine races and S,2SS for ! nilman, his victories including the Harold Stakes at Latonia, Quickstep Stakes at Washington Park, : Great Kastern Handicap, at Shecpshcad Bay. Man- ! ufacturers Stakes at St. Louis and the Arlington ! Stakes and Capital Stakes at the old Ivy City track, Washington. Then Ullman sold Raceland to August Belmont for Jf20,000, making all around f a remarkable profit on an original investment of 05. Raceland had a track career covering eight years and proved himself a race horse of high class in every respect. He raced in Mr. Belmonts colors in 1SSS, 1SS9 and 1S99 and in the three years won for him among other races the Suburban, New York Jockey Club, Grand National, .Metropolitan, Melrose and Manhattan Handicaps, and Emporium, Spindrift, Barnegat. Raritan and Ocean Stakes, meeting and holding his own with such celebrities as King- ston, Hanover, Firenze, Terra Cotta, Eurus, Gorgo 1 and others of high being. Then he was sold to 1 Michael F. Dwyer when .Mr. Belmonts death led to the dispersal sale of his great stable and raced 1 for him until his usefulness had departed. For Dwyer he won many races, stakes and purses and 1 when retired from the track it was with this lion- 1 orable record: r Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2.1. 3d. Unp. Won. 1 !SS7 2 12, ! Strathmeath formed a traveling combina- 0 tlon familiar on all the big tracks of the country from New York to San Francisco. In the course of t thejr adventures Strathmeath made Morris a rich . man, but when he could no longer serve as a faithful bread winner the wealth he hair earned was not conserveu prudently, and Morris is said to be a poor man again. Strathmeath was perhaps the best 0 Bon of Strathmorc, although Strathmorc begot many good horses. He was a capital two-year-old, and J" among his successes won the Algeria Stakes at Gravesend, Junior Champion Stakes and Tyro Slakes at Monmouth Park, and Partridge Stakes and Spring Stakes at Sheepshcad Bay. Carrying 121 pounds he is Tan third, to Potomac and Masher for the Futurity of 1S90, Potomac having up 115 pounds aud Masher 10S. . 1 Morris brought Strathmcath out to Washngton Park, in 1S91, and realized a dearly cherished desire to win the American Derby with him. It was a prpbably the proudest day. of the old turfmans long career when Strathmeath came homein front of Poet Scout and Kingman, with the great race easily won. Besides this great feat, Strathmeath 5 that year and In subsequent years won such important events as the Twin City Handicap at Shceps- 1 head Bay, Stockton Stakes at Monmouth Park, Country Club Handicap at Morris Park, Spencer 3 Stakes and Merchants Stakes at Saratoga, St. Nlch- 1 olas Hotel Stakes at Latonia and many other races of minor- Importance. Epsom Lad 1887, br. g, by Ladas Disorder. Epsom Lad, the holder of the English record for money-winning geldings, won but five races in an easy eareer covering five seasons and seventeen races. He was bred by Lord Rosebery and was a smart two-year-old, winning the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood and boating the Kings crack. Diamond Jubilee. That and a dead heat were his only victories in 1SS9. As a three-year-old Epsom Lads racing career was shabby and he was disposed of to T. Kincaid and came out in his colors as a four-year-old in 1901. That year Epsom Lad made his mark on the turf strikingly and confirmed his two-year-old form. He ran but five races, but won nearly ,00,0 in two of them. He was second in the Jockey Chd Stakes at Newmarket to Pieler-maritzburg and won the ten thousand pounder the Eclipse Stakes at Saudown Park from Ian and Mr. .fames R. Kecne.s Disguise II., and also the hv Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket, worth nearly ? 10,000, defeating . Diamond Jubilee again. That year virtually ended .Epsom Lads racing, career. He was sold to J. Buchanan and ran . but three races for him without placing or financial profit. Here Is Epsoni Lads turf work in figures: Year. A. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Salvidcro 1804, ch. g, by Bclvidcrc Sallio of Navarre. Salvidere occupies, a place anioug the geldings that have won great sums hat cannot now be. exactly defined, for the reason that he may yet have a long career Icfore him ami probably much money to add to his already considerable total. It might easily be presaged for him that if his career is to cover as many racing years as those of Banquet, Raceland or. Strathmeath, lie is destined to be the greatest money-earning gelding of turf history here or abroad. His winnings so far having mainly been achieved in slake races, his average per race is only second to that of Epsom Lad. His tabulated record is given elsewhere, but for convenience in comparing, is reported lie.ro and is as follows: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. The examination of the records necessary for the compilation of the tables above, showed the so-called record for winning geldings, which was printed from off-hand figures in Daily Racing Form of October S, lo be incorrect. The figures of the past, asjianded down by various turf publications, usually are. Epsom Lad was credited with winning 12,533. As a matter of fact he won 09,-S23. Raceland was said to be the record bidder with a total of 20,120. Ho really won 10,301 and, Banquet, witli spoils of 1S,533. is the leader among the money -earning geldings. The figures on Strnthmealhs full racing career were compiled for comparisons sake. The vital figures in those of the five horses are given below: Horse. Races. Won. Winnings. Average.
