OLD CAMPAIGNER IS NO MORE. W. B. Gates, Veteran of 299 Races, Reported Killed on Pacific Coast. Memphis. Tenn.. June 10. — News has reached here of the death of the old horse, W. B. Gates, a racer that helped to lay the foundation for the fortune of George C. Bennett, the Memphis bookmaker. formerly of Mobile. Ala. W. B. iates is said to 1 have been shot by a San Francisco humane officer sixm after beiug sold for a trifling amount recently. W. B. Gates was widely credited with having won 100 races some few years ago. but as a matter of fact his record falls considerably short of that figure. He was a horse that was raced with great frequency over an extended period of years, especially after his transfer from George C. Bennett as a six-year-old to Captain R. R. Rice, of Arkansas, in whose colors he thereafter raced until the infirmities of age put an end to his usefulness for purse winning purposes. His last appearance under colors came last year, when he was twelve vears old. He was a bay gelding by Prince Royal — Penelope, an English-bred mare by Shifual — Polly Perkins. W. B. Gates was bred by Mrs. James B. Ferguson at Kingston Stud, near Lexington. Ky.. and was acquired as a yearling by George C. Bennett. He was not raced as a two-year-old and his career on the turf began at Memphis in the spring of 1S99. Mr. Bennett raced him as a three, four and five-year-old.
