SPIRITED RACING AT BLUE BONNETS. Stellaland and S. S. B. Make Showings That Aro Especially Disappointing. Montreal. Que.. June 16. — A steeplechase over the two mile .-.uirse and a race for province-bred horses were tic attractions at Blue Bonnets this afternoon. Tlie card was a good one and brought another large gathering to the beautiful trsick lack of Mount Roval. Evenly balanced fields went to the post in most of the races and close finishes resulted. Couip-ton and .raw ford both won their races by the smallest of margins after especially hard stretch drives. Compton and Topsy Robinson were winning favorites. The track dried out over night and the going was good, although not fast. The disappointments of the afternoon were S. S. B. and Stellaland. The latters race was especially bad in the light of liis .lever slowing under hMviuottT a few days previ-i ously. Hetdcr bad the TBoun* this afternoon and at no stage of the trip was Stellaland a factor. He jumped slovenly ana was deficient in speed, the finish finding hiin beaten off fifteen or twenty leirgths. The winner turned up in Big Bear, the paddock tip among the smart set. Tlie race for province-bred horses, practically a renewal of the Kings Plate, except that the distance was a mile instead of a mile and a qnarte.*. was attended by an upset. On what they had shown in previous racing. S. S. B. looked much the best of his field, and the big operators eagerly accepted .Mlds-on about his chances. Victoria made nearly all the pace and won with ease from S. S. B.. which managed to beat Okis out of the place. When Busy was scratched from the second race the stewards ordered that Oomptou lie coupled with Dalhousie as the Clyde and Weston entry. This saved the favorite players from losing a wager, for Dalhousie was the one most fancied of the pair. Goldstein, who had been ill. signalized his return to the waddle by riding two winners. Compton and Topsy Robinson. The latter won her race with sucu ease that many wondered over her previous race. James Carruthers. who contemplates purchasing several useful horses to race on the Canadian circuit, this morning acquired the two-year-old. Autumn Girl, from William Garth, and the mare. Jeanett" M.. from J. Gormley. Tlie pair were turned over to John Shields, who will be Mr. Carruthers trainer. Alliert E. Dyment. vice-president of the Canadian Breeding iBureau, was a visitor at Blue Bonnets this afternoon.
