: MADDEN CHANGES OPINION OF FAYETTE. New York. June 16. — John E. Madden now admits that he is greatly disappointed in his colt. Fayette. I astt year the sou of Ogden was rated not far behind bis stableniate. Sir Martin, and Maddeu refused several tempting offers for him. When the present season opened Madden predicted that Fayette would be the star of the three-year-old division and when the colt ran second to King James in the Metropolitan Handicap, it began to look as if his shrewd owner had spoken bv the card. Fayettes defeats in the Withers and the Belmont were attributed by Madden to the heavv going. When the colt worked a briL-iiant mile at Sheepshead Bay last week for the Carlton stakes, the master of Hamburg Place was jubilant. Still, over a fast track Fayette received another crushing defeat In the Carlton, whereupon Madden suddenly t hanged his opinion thatJlie Ogden coit would win the Suburban, while other turfmen reached the conclusion that Fayette had. for some unknown reason, degenerated into nothing more than .a selling plater.
