FALL PROGRAM AT BLUE BONNETS. Montreal Jockey Club Announces Stakes for Autumn Meeting to Begin Sept. 4. The Montreal Jockey Club announces an attractive program of stake events for its autumn meeting, which will be held this year in September, opening on Saturday, the 4th, and concluding on Saturday, the JSth. embracing thirteen racing days in all. Tlie entries for the stakes will close with the secretary, 1 1 St. Sacramento street. Montreal, at midnight Thursday,- August 15. and those who desire blanks may obtain them fom him. The spring meeting at Montreal was the most successful ever held by the Montreal Jockey Club, in spite of the scourge of influenza which incapacitated so many horses and which was particularly severe on the thoroughbreds quartered at Toronto. There is every reason to believe that the autumn session will show an improvement so far as class horses are concerned over that of June, as most of the horses that were sick are once more in training, to say nothing of several hundred head that have since come into Canada from Kentucky and the west. Last spring distemper fell with especial severity upon the stable of Joseph K. Seagram, M. P.. president of the Canadian Racing Associations, who has had but two horses in training out of his twenty-four. The manv friends of this good sportsman hope that he will have a full measure of success in the autumn, when Bouquet and other fleet racers owned by him probably will lie themselves again. The best event on the program for Blue Bonnets next fall is the Earl Grey Cup, for" three-year-olds aud upward, at one mile and a quarter, which has an added value of ,500, but the Laurier Handicap, for three-year-olds, at one mile and an eighth, which has ,200 added by the club, will also attract a strong field and should furnish an equally good contest. The St. Denis and Champlain ure selling events at six furlongs and one mile respectively, and each will have ,000 added by the Montreal Jockey Club. The open two-year-old events are the Ilochelaga. a handicap at seven furlongs, and the Huron, a selling race at six furlongs. The former should furnish a cracking good contest, as it is far enough to test the stamina as well as the speed of those that go to the post. The other two-3-ear-ohl event is the Provincial Nursery, for youngsters owned, foaled and raised in the Province of Quebec. This is the first running of a stake which the Montreal Jockey Club hopes and believes is destined to do a world of good for the advancement of the horse breeding industry iu the province. There probably will be not more than four or live contestants this year, but in 1910 there will be more and, under governmental aid, the time is not far distant when a dozen or more contestants will go to the post. For this raqe the coming fall the Montreal Jockey Club will add 00 and the provincial government will contribute a like amount, which will be divided among the breeders of the first four horses in the following ratio: 25 to the breeder of the winner. 2.1 to the breeder of the second, 5 to the breeder of the third, and 0 to thy breeder of the fourth. Thoroughbred mares are being bought by Canadian gentlemen whose interest has been aroused and these are being mated with stallions that have been brought from England and the United States with the blood of champions in their veins. The steeplechase stake is the Stratheona, over the two and a half mile course, whicli has an added value of ,000. . The fact that but one stake is provided for chasers does not mean that Montreal will not hang up as much money as usual for crosscountry races. On the contrary, some of the overnight races through the field will have 00 or 00 added, and if there are sufficient horses on the grounds to warrant it there will be a race through the field every day. The stake program for the meeting will be reinforced by several races with 00 and 00 added. The list of stakes follows: Provincial Nursery, for two-year-olds, 00 added: 5-S mile. Hoehelaga Handicap, for two-year-olds, ,000 added: 7-8 mile. Huron Selling Stakes, for two-year-olds. ,000 added: 3-4 mile. Laurier Handicap, for three-year-olds, ,200 added: 1 1-8 miles. Earl Grey Cup. for three-year-olds and upward, ,500 added; 1 1-4 .miles. Champlain Selling Stakes, for three-year-olds and upward. ,000 added: 1 mile. St. Denis Selling Stakes, for three-year-olds and upward. ,000 added: 3-4 mile. Stratheona Steeplechase Handicap, for four-year-olds and upward. ,000 added; about 2 1-2 miles.
