WEST TAKES LIONS SHARE VISITING HORSEMEN FURNISHED FOUR OF YESTERDAYS WINNERS AT YONKERS. Criticism Called Forth by Improvement Shown in Some Instances The Fad Returns to Winning Form Announcement on Saratoga Stakes. W New York, July 1!. Western horses won four of the six races sit Yonkers today. Tlioy were Ilalket. Campeon, Gliding Hello and The Fad. The rcinain-injr victors were Evening Song and Ronnie Kelso, two consistent racers from the metropolitan racing o-stablishments of Harry Payne Whitney and George M. Odom. With the exception of G corse J1. Long, tlie visiting horsemen were generally criticised for the sudden improvement displayed by their horses. Conspicuous among these was The Fad. whose amazing speed today was in glsiring contrast to his previous effort. In which, notwithstanding that it was preceded by a private trial at Ave furlongs, said to have been ilim In the sensational time of one minute, the Van meter gelding was unable to raise a respectable gallop. The handicap for two-year-olds furnished the most Interesting race of the day. a quintette of good ones that included The Fad, Fauntleroy, Donau. Louise S.-and Firebox participating. The eventual winner speedily proceeded to run away from his opposition. The pace was so fast that Donau, the flying leaders most persistent pursuer, tired badly at the end. This permitted the rating and staying Fauntleroy to beat him decisively for the place. Fauntleroy neariv overhauled The Fad as well. Louise S., starting for the Hrst time in the name and colors of James K. Gaffney, finished with a belated rush and this good fillys race should not be taken seriously. The same thing applies with equal force to Dr. Barkley. which finished unplaced in the mile handicap to Gliding Belle, Casuue and Prince Ahmed. The Schulte filly enjoyed a big pull in the weights and was probably better served by the track conditions than any of her adversaries. Ilalket, with Dugan up and an outside position, also enjoyed a monopoly of racing luck, riding talent and favorable footing. One of the principal stewards of the jockey club, however, seemed to view what he .considered the in-and-out running of the western trainers and horses with disfavor. He was overheard tp express himself to the effect that some of these men imperiled the sport, wherever they raced. There is a growing opinion that the jockey club handlcap-per seems at a loss to properly classify the western horses. The program, though lacking in special features, ileveloped extra good sport. Favorites held their own. with three races to their credit. Page was highly praised for his skillful and persistent handling of Campeon. which seemed a beaten horse a furlong from the wire in the second race. Thomas Hitchcocks good steeplechaser. California King, has been shipped to France to try for crosscountry honors there. A. Henry Higginson of Boston, a prominent member of the hunt clubs of the east, has acquired the good steeplechaser Sir Wooster. John K. Madden made an extensive shipment of racers to Saratoga today. The Saratoga Association lias alinounced the added money to four of their big fixtures. Ti-e Grand Union sind United States, for two-year-olds-, will each have ,000 added, while the Spinawav and Travers will get 000 apiece. Entries for yearlings will close on the usual date. It is said that JicCahey rode Krlkina. the hot tin in the second race, with his feet out of the stirrups. This greatly enhanced the value of the fillys race. She is a grand looker and may be a coming good one. Woodford Clay has shipped his good tilly. Ocean Hound, to Saratoga, where she will be fitted for her stake engagements. It was a trille cloudy today, but this circumstance did not materially affect the attendance, which was about five thousand. The rain of yesterday had soaked the track, but it was harrowed into fairly good shape On the outside, while the inside remained heavy in spots.
