Green Reduces Track Record for Fivo and One-Half Furlongs Steeplechase Jockeys Under the Ban William Walker Buys Apache. Buffalo, N. Y., July 19. Todays racing at Fort Erie was marred by spills which attended the running of the first two races and were responsible for the death of a pair of racers. In the opener. Beau Nash, the favorite, went down as a result of crowding at the half mile post and his destruction followed on account of the colt having sustained a fractured leg. Tlie second race was a steeplechase and was replete witli mishaps to all the starters except Bergoo. the winner. Gait was killed Instantly when he fell at the eleventh jump and landed on his neck. Jockey Rcid, who had the mount on Beau Nash, was the only rider to sustain Injuries and they were of a trifling nature. The good card again served to nttract a large attendance to the course, and, as most of the winners were well supported, the sport was profitable as well as enjoyable to tlie many. The steeplechase was intended as the feature, but it was a farcial contest, in consequence of the mishaps that befell all but the, winner. During the early running Banncll was the leader, but a swerve at the eighth hedge enabled Bergoo to go to the front and he was not thereafter headed. Bannell held the others safe until approaching the final jump, where he unseated his rider and- allowed Caloorahatchee to take second money. Huddy, which had been carried out when Reginald bolted at the first .jump, was remounted and finished in time to get third place. The purse race at a mile -resulted In an. easy victory for the muchilmprovcd Apache-, which led from start to finish and won cantering in the fast time of 1:39. The Minks made a sensational stretch run and came from last place to wear down Gretna Green for second money. The sprint handicap was taken by Little Osage In easy style. He was favorite and led from barrier rise. Lady Esther was the nearest contender throughout. In the opening race Brevite came with a rush at the end and managed to wear down Royal Report. Stolypin. which had graduated from the maiden ranks in his previous essay, made good in the sixth race, in which he beat Dispute and Woolwinder. The jndges have been quietly at work for several flays looking into the running of several steeplechases, and, as a result of their investigation, promulgated a ruling this afternoon warning from tlie course jockeys Archibald and Beamish. This practically amounts to a ruling off. as the Canadian Racing Associations probably will supplement tills ruling by revoking their licenses. Jockey Stone was also involved to some extent, but his .case is still pending, and "until its final disposition he will not he permitted to accept mounts. Archibald Is said to have been guilty of fraudulent practices in that he attempted to fix races. According to report Dr. Koch was the supposed nominee when Ester-joy won. Dr. Koch on that. -occasion met with a mishap and failed to finish. John Dillon is said to have been the one selected on Friday last, but Bergoo upset the plans. Beamish is alleged to have aided Archibald. . T. M. Green. In winning the third race, reduced tlie track record for five and one-half furlongs from 1:003 to 1:00;. The judges today went further into the complaint of jockey Hayncs. rider of Reidmoore on Saturday, and announced that jockey Musgrave, who rode Giles, had been suspended and fined 0 as a result of his tactics. Jockey McKinney was lined 0 by the starter for disobedience at tlie -iiost iu the steeplechase race. James McLaughlin,-. Jr., has acquired the contract on Guy Burns services for the remainder of the Canadian season and will make his future engagements. McLaughlin purchased today the filly. Daisy Garth, from William Garth; William Walker purchased Apache after his victory this afternoon for a. reported price of ,500. nbout half of what shrewd horsemen consider him worth. P. T. Chinn is said to have been willing to pay ,000 for him. Apache will be shipped, together with Marse Alio, to Empire City tomorrow. Jockey Nicol was a visitor, this afternoon. He Is en route to Saratoga, where he will ride for the Chelsea Stable.
