ENGLISH BOOKMAKERS OPPOSING MUTUELS. Loudon, Eng., July 19. The bookmakers and "Australian John" Heath have been h.i. iiig It out hot and heavy because of Healas installation of the Australian totalization system at luigliah race tracks. The bookmakers object strenuously to tlie innovation, but Heath apparently has the tacit support of the racing authorities, for ho lias been permitted to continue operations after taking advice of Scotland Yard and being assured that there Is notLing whatever illegal in his system. Heath has been working o:i a small scale, studiously avoiding operating in large sums, and will not even take as much as a pound at a time from a backer. But the bookmakers aro keenly incensed.
