NOTES OF THE TURF. A partnership has been registered between I. T. Chinu and R. L.. Thomas in Great; Heavens. Jockey Oiler was ruled off at Tulsa last week for an unsatisfactory ride on Hope, a hot favorite. George Brazier, who formerly trained for C. R. Ellison, is among the recent arrivals at New York. Arthur Elrod, who will manage the Windsor ring this summer, was a visitor at Empire City Saturday. Jim Gaffney, which Frank Weir sold in California last spring, is now doing stud duty in British Columbia. Eddie Dugans handling of Alfred Noble in the Empire City Handicap drew the lire of the eastern racing critics. Clifford Drew of Tulsa, Okla., has purchased the three-year-old bay filly, Starbeam, by Juvenal Beautiful Star. John E. Maddeus Newmarket has been lame for saveral weeks and there is little chance that he will, race at Saratoga. H. T. Grlllln, who retired from the turf at the close of the last California season. Is enjoying hlm-s-elf autoinoblling on the Pacific coast this summer. It is announced that the Colorado Interstate Fair at Denver will run for one week, and there will be racing for a week longer, with the possibility of booking. The fair will open Sept. 13. The average of 24 received for the 218 yearlings sold at Sheepshead Bay this summer compares favorably, considering the circumstances, with the average of about 50 obtained in 1007, when racing was in its heydey. The Sanfords have a hcrse called Van Den In the Travels at Saratoga. Tills colt is a son of Rocktou and Retaliation. He is a half-brother to the good Gonsalvo mare, Vails. Vails will not race again. She is not in any of the Saratoga stakes for which a mare of her age is eligible. Dictkan, one of the Sanford two-year-olds. Is named for Baron DIeskan, a gallant German who fell on the shores of Lake Champlaln In the eighteenth century. Herkimer, another Sanford youngster, is named for the American Revolutionary hero who died gloriously in the fighting lietween the British under Burgoyne and the American colonists under Gates, Arnold and Morgan in 1778, which culminated in Burgoynes surrender at Saratoga.
