YEARLINGS PROFITABLE AND OTHERWJSE AS TWO-YEAR-OLDS . . 4, It has long ago been said that buying two-year-olds is a lottery. It Is a lottery in Its uncertainty of outcome and, to the majority of owners, has all the fascination that attends the purchase of a ticket that may bring a fortune for practically nothing in comparison. A yearling may be ever so well formed and ever so well bred, yet that does not guarantee that it will bo a good race horse and no one can foretell with certainty that the ugly duckling in any band of yearlings may not develop Into a star of the track. Yet, all things considered, the truly formed and fashionably bred one is deemed to have the liest chance anil sells liest, sometimes to justify its purchase and not infrequently to prove a costly disappointment. There are examples both ways in the two-year-olds of this year which were sold at public auction in VJO.S. Rocky OBrien cost but 00 and has already returned his owner 1,130. As a business proposition he has proved an investment that might well evoke envy In tlie mind of any man. Examples of ample returns by cheaply-bought ones are afforded by Redeem, which cost hut 0 and has won ,175, and Bed-minster, bought for 5 and winner of ,115. Neither is much in the way of a race horse, but each has made a notable return over its cost and well paid its expenses In food, shelter, equipment and training. Of those that sold for considerable sums. Flying Squirrel, at ,200, lfas done best in his return in earnings of -S8.105. and Itesponsful at ,100. Kid at ,000 and Polls at ,000 have each won their purchase price mid more. Dalmatian, which cost 00, and Donau, which cost 50, have- proved, great bargains, in view t.f their earnings of ,155 and 1909.sh,100 respectively.
