WEAKLING INVESTMENTS THAT PAID WELL. Sanford Lyne and His Partners Reap Profit of 0,-000 on Expenditure of Less than Amount. Lexington, ,Ky.. September 11 Sanford Lyne and his partner, an Indianapolis banker, cleared not less than ,000 each on their recent speculation in young thoroughbred horses. At the McGrathiaua dispersal and other sales hero in the fall of 1908, Mr. Lyne bought twenty-nine head of weanlings for ,355. The money for their purchase and to carry them through the succeeding ten months was provided by the Indianapolis financier. The cost of putting these youngsters into the Sales ring at Sheepshead Bay, where they went under the hammer last Saturday SV n- aKggate of 8,775, was approximately $.5,500. Ihe. Fasig-Tiptou, Companys commission and other incidentals amounted to ,920. leaving a net profit of 0,000 to be divided between Mr. Lyne and his partner. The result Is a testimonial to the foresight of the master of Larchmont Stud. At the time Mr. Lj-ne bought these young thoroughbreds his friends regarded his venture as one that would result in financial loss. Many of his intimates told him they thought he was losing his mind, so little faith had they in the future of the thoroughbred market. As an example of the enhanced values, the list of the thoroughbreds bought, as weanlings by Mr; Lyne Is given below, together with the prices paid at the time of purchase and the prices for which they- were sold as yearlings at Sheepshead Bay last Saturday.: Cost Sale price. price. E. R. Bradley paid ,200 for him last w;eek. Those who are able to buy weanlings this fall for an average of about 50 to 00 will probably make money by holding them eight or ten months. There are not many weanlings to bo offered publicly this fall and the buying will have to be done privately, the breeders will not be so anxious to let them go as they were last fall. They are better fixed financially now than then and. besides, the signs Of the tunes are for prosperity in racing, whereas to the majority it was the reverse last fall.
