MANOWARSPROGENY * Florence Nightingale Winner of Coaching Club American Oaks. — i Vox Populi LT. Lucky in Steeplechase — Pepp Wins Highweight Handicap — Two for Sande. i NEW YORK, N. T., June 3.— Florence Nightingale, the brown daughter of Man o War and The Nurse that races for Walter M. Jeffords, was an easy winner of the mile and three-eighths of the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park this afternoon. The race was worth 3,400, which included a piece of plate of the value of 00 and the race was run in the excellent time of 2:17%. It was William Ziegler, Jr.s Gamble that raced to second place, with A. Lee Rosenbergs Extra Dry, third ; George D. Wideners Chatterer fourth, and the Oak Ridge Stables Idiosyncrasy last of the five that started. In this running there was an old English turf custom observed when the owners led their horses to the course and, after the finish, Mr. Jeffords led his filly back to the weighing enclosure in the paddock. In the absence of Mr. Widener it was A. J. Joyner that led Chatterer to the track, while Mr. Ryan not being present, John Loftus led Idiosyncrasy. The day was an excellent one for the sport. The track was at its best and a good crowd was in attendance. Florence Nightingale was so much best of the fillies in the Oaks that the result was never in doubt. McDermott lost no time taking her into the lead and he had her under a nice steadying restraint to have her go the first quarter in :23%. Idiosyncrasy was racing second, also under restraint and Chatterer was a close third, with Extra Dry and Gamble bringing up the rear. It was leaving the back stretch that Florence Nightingale shook off the Ryan filly and went into a good lead. She was going so well that it was apparent she would win. WINS BY FIVE LENGTHS. Going to the stretch turn Sande shook up Gamble and then went to the whip. All through the stretch he drove hard and while the filly responded with good courage, she could not cut down the lead of the Jeffords filly, the daughter of Man o War being home winner by five lengths. The run through the stretch carried Gamble ten lengths before Extra Dry and that filly was a full six lengths before Chatterer, which in turn beat Idiosyncrasy three lengths. After the running Mr. Jeffords was called into the stand where he was presented with the trophy that went with the stake. Sande rode his second winner of the day when he brought George W. Lofts Pepp home the winner in the three-quarters highweight handicap that was the fifth. At the end. he was showing the way to Iee Rosenbergs Sun Pal, with Giford A. Cochrans Dangerous a close third and Tester fourth over Devonshire. From a good start. Tester was the one to go to the front, but Sun Pal, Pepp and Dangerous were not far away. Devonshire was slow to be under way and it took him some time to find his racing stride. On the stretch turn Tester was beginning to tire of his pace-making and it was there that Sande made his move with Pepp. This carried him into the command and hustling him right along, he had three lengths to spare at the end. LAST RACE TO CRUSADER, Crusader, racing for Glen Riddle Stable and ridden by jockey Maiben, accounted for the running of the final race of the afternoon in a drive from W. M. Jeffords Mars, while Sandstorm, from the Oneck Stable, was third. The race was marred by considerable swerving in the first part for which Mars was to blame. Celidon was knocked out of contention as a result of the interference caused by Early Ynte swerving after being bumped. The first two home were the Offspring of Man o War. The opening race was a five-eighths dash through the straight for two-year-olds and under claiming conditions. It proved rather . i.-v fur .1. Wormsers Orbit, lie began fast and, taking a course down the middle of the track, ran straight all the way to be home with s.imething to spare. Downcast, tile unsexed son of Upset and Forecast that races for the Oneek Stable, was always a forward contender and he took second place, with he Edenburg Stables Shiraz finishing third. H. W. Maxwells Vox Topull IT. was a lucky winner of the short course steeplechase though lie had a wide margin to spare over A. . l.ostwicks chuckle with W. V. Continued on twi-ntj fourth page. MAN 0 WARS PROGENY Contintietl from first par* Pwjprs St. Lawrence finishing third. Vox Fopuli II. was lucky for the reason that John W. Converses Silver Threads went down at the last jump, when he seemed well nidi sure to beat the Maxwell jumper. And Silver Threads made his mistake for the reason that l.urpess had his feet out of the stirrups when he took Silver Threads to the last jump. Another that came down was J. R. Macombers P.ashdon. It was at that jump that Silver Threads stumbled as be landt-d and BHfSH lost both his stirrup irons. He sit down and rode hard into the front field without regaining the stirrups and was in that condition when he came to the last fence well lapped on the leader. That brought the spill already mentioned. At the time of his fall Silver Threads was going so well that it seemed certain he would have beaten Vox Populi II. but for the accident. Mino, from the Oak Ridge Stable, under a hurtling ride by Sande, led all the way to be winner of the mile of the Wheatiey Ilirse. that was the third offering. K. -K. Ilitts Crumple outfinished the Log Cabin Stables Resolution to take seeond place and it was the Relair Stables Sir Ronald that was I fourth. Beginning quickly, Mino was rushed away from the others by Sande and when lie was nicely clear he was rated along in that front position. Permanent Wa.- was showing the way to the others and Resolution was rating alongside of Sir nonald, with Kings Ransom baek of him. Mino was still well elear making the turn into the Btretcta and there Permanent Wave was beginning to tire of the chase, but Resolution was working his way through and Crumple was moving up strongly i n t •■ rmtrtia. Right at the eml Mino was tiring and Sande had to keep at liirn to make him the ■winner, I ut the:*- was still dnybght back of him and Crumple proved gainer than Resolution In the final finch.
