Y., April 13.— High Star, one of the Derby candidates in the I»g Cabin Stud Stable, showed one of the best workouts of the training season at Belmont Park Tuesday morning when he galloped a mile easily in l -.49%. Trainer Louis Fcnstul has the colt close to racing condition and his work was impressive. High Star went the first three-quarters in 1:19 and seven-eighths in 1:33. He was not extended at any time and was practicallv pulled up in the last eighth. Although the stables chief dependence in the Derby is Chance Play. High Star will undoubtedly gain consideration if he continues to improve as may be expected from this training gallop The fine weather and fast track conditions caused the majority of the trainers to bring out their charges for workouts and exercise during the morning. Pompey. W. R. Coes Derby candidate, wis brought out for a slow run of seven -eighths. He covered the distance in 1:373*. but was not asked for speed at any time. Trainer Karrick is bringing the son of Sun Briar and Cleopatra along slowly, although he appears tough and ready for intensive training as a result of the long spell of shed exercise which preceded his first appearance on the track a few uays ago. Whether he will be ready for the Derby or not still appears prob- lematical. but trainer Karrick is taking no chances of ruining the colt by rushing his pre pa ration.
