I . though before post time it was generally j ] agreed that Beat Friend held his company safe. Then then- was a report that the son ] of St. Hock was hesinning to huck and that , lie might not run up to his hest form. , Whether or not that had anything to do with j j his defeat by lied Rocket is not definitely L Known, hut the Pastime Stable colt has j ] shown quality before and he may be able to], turn the trick again. I SHOWS MOST SPKFD. The start was ■ good one :n,il Rod Rocket; was mini alert than the others leaving the . 1 barrier. Smith sent liim right along and t while Beat Fiitnd raced at his heels and [ i sooa had three lengths oji the others lie l could come bo closer. Through the stretch I Hest Friend responded to Turners energetic I drive, but the best lie could accomplish was 1 to finish just half a length back of lied ; I Rocket. And Bobby Jones was also closing ; strongly to be a good .third W. .1. Owens St. Valentine was winner of the ae -ondary attraction. He led home a good band in the three-quarters mile fifth | race, a claiming affair for four-year-olds and | over. At the end be hail a head advantage l over Canister, from the Joaquin Stable, and Mrs. A Sweiike- Mingo was a close third. ! Mungo was the one to set the pan and | Bruna and St. Valentine chased along after. bin with Canister not far away. This was j the order until well into the stretch, where , S. Valentine came with a rush as Mungo tirej Canister ai . finished with good eour- age and was catching the son of Theo. Cook j , at the end. but St. Valentine had lasted to|-aave the day. K"f? tired in the final | drive, while Brans stopped hadly in the final : eighth. The opening race was a six and a half furlongs dash that saw harles Turners Cooacaa the winner by ■ length, but with something to spare from Mis. W. EL Den-h.irns Freemason, with J. Nrliainkins Gala-Ua the one to race third. It was Calatia that cut out all the pace, and Sea Baad .based along after her. with Cooacaa not far away and under a slight restraint in the early racing. Freemason was following the first three and galloping strongly, while the othera were more or less strung out. COOX ANS WINMN . MOVK. It was not until rounding :i:to the stretch thai Ceouean made his winning move. w. Smith had come around on the outside, and before tie- eighth post was readied it was a poor wit that the aid gelding was to be winner. In that last eighth Calatia tired badly, while Freemason came with a determined roan to take aeoond place without seriously threatening the winner Calatia was tiring badly, but she hutted long enough to save third from Sea Band. Kilauea who was ridden by V. Wallis. was fortunate to escape with a severe shaking , up, and shortly afterwards walked back to the scales unassisted. Kilauea was the one! to set the pace, but he was closely followed I by Cave Woman and Knight of Merci II. in the early stuges. while Poor Sport had scant speed and was last. Knight of Merci II. was first of the leaders to tire and as he dropped back both Cave Woman and Camouflage drew up on Kilauea, while Poor Sport had begun to move up and was making up ground rapidly on the inside in the stretch. Camouflage drew alongside of Kilauea and i at the same time Lieutenant Farrell got into contention, but the latter was in close quarters and with scant racing room. Then it was Camouflage bore over on Kilauea and bumped him so severely he fell. After the accident Camouflage drew out to be winner by a length. Lieutenant Farrell had also been interfered with by Camouflage and Stott, who had the mount, went into the stand. The stewards called Lacaste. who! j rode Poor Sport, before them and on the ! report of these two riders the disqualifies- j | tion promptly followed.
