ANOTHER FOR MAN 0 WAR His Daughter Edith Cavell Victress in Coaching Club American Oaks Beats Black Maria and Rapture in Croat CroatFilly Filly Race Storm King Outlasts Outlasts3lino 3lino in Close Finish NEW YORK N T June 9 Edith Cavell the daughter of Man o War and The Nurse which races for Walter M Jeffords dupli ¬ cated the feat of her sister Florence Nightin ¬ gale when she romped off with the Coaching Club American Oaks It was the big event of the Wednesday racing at Belmont Park and was worth 12100 to the winner this amount including a piece of plate of the value of 200 By her victory Edith Cavell gave Mr Jeffords two legs on the Singleton Cup which must be won three times before it becomes the property of any sportsman Back of the daughter of Man o War at the finish came W R Coes Kentucky Oaks winner Black Maria soundly beaten and third in the company was H P Whitneys Rapture winner of the Pimlico Oaks in which she took the measure of Black Maria Thus three different fillies have won the three big filly prizes prizesJust Just half a dozen went to the post for this renewal and while Edith Cavell was a worthy winner it was a slowly run race and not a test that tended to show the fillies as the equal of others that have gone before There was some delay at the post for which Rapture was chiefly to blame but the start was a good one and Coltiletti lost little time in going into command with Edith Cavell when he found the pace slow Fator soon moved up next to the inside rail until he was in second place with Black Maria and the daughter of Black Toney was just can ¬ tering in back of the leader And an idea of how slow that was is had when they raced the first quarter in 24 seconds and went to the half in 50 seconds secondsRapture Rapture by this time was in third place and it had narrowed to a three horse race with all three of them tinder restraint The threequarters were run in 115 and still there was no serious moveon the part of any of the riders Going to the stretch turn Fator roused Biack Maria but as he made his move Coltiletti had merely to shake up Edith Cavell and the Jeffords filly held to her lead Shortly after swinging for home Fator went to work in earnest on the black filty but it was all to no avail and Edith Cavell was home the winner by two lengths and in hand Four lengtns farther back came Rapture and the others followed home badly beaten beatenThis This victory of Edith Cavell completed a double for the Jeffords silks for the two yearold St Joseph was winner of the second race of the day Frank Coltiletti shared in the double for he had both mounts mountsIt It was a wonderful finish that marked the decision of the High Weight Handicap over the Widener Course when Joseph E Davis Storm King just nosed out Mino from the Oak Ridge Stable Charles A Hills Continued on sixteenth page ANOTHER FOR MAN 0 WAR Continued from first page Millwick was a close third and five lengths further away came Frank MarloWs Anna Marrone II IIThere There was considerable delay at the post but the start was a good one and Sande forced the pace from the first stride Anna ilarrone II and Patricia J were close after the top weight of the party and Turner was withing striking distance and racing Storm King along next to the inner rail Thia order was well maintained until the last quarter post was reached There Storm King made his first serious move and he quickly drew alonside of Mino When Mino held to his lead Turner eased Storm King ever so slightly and determined to make his bid later In the meantime Anna Marrone II was tiring while Millwick was closing in resolute fashion Inside the last eighth Turner charged again with Storm King but as he came alongside Mino fought it out desperately and to many it seemed that he had saved the day but that second charge of Storm King had been a successful one and he nodded his nose down in front frontJockeys Jockeys that had never ridden a winner had an opportunity in the opening race a mile for platers It marked the graduation of H Gotterup a lad who has had several chances He rode G C Winfreys Frigate to victory with E Fewell finishing second on P H Faulconers Little Dave while Johnny Campbell beat Osage for third thirdNaturally Naturally the inexperience of the jockeys took much from the interest in the race and some of the exhibitions of these aspir ¬ ing riders were pitiful That applied with peculiar force to little H Xathan who had the mount on Kathleen Crosby She was away well enough but the little fellow either through timidity or for some other reason eased her back as others came alongside until she was completely out of the running runningOsage Osage and Nero cut out the early pace but in the stretch Frigate went around to beat Johnny Campbell which made his bid at the turn for home The wisdom of these races is doubtful The inexperienced boys can learn little riding with their like and it would be much better to have the lads learn to ride in the morning than in the afternoon afternoonSt St Joseph the chestnut son of Golden Broom and Christmas Star racing for Walter Jeffords graduated from the maiden class in the four and a half furlongs of the second race But it was an exceedingly close fit when he just nosed out H T Archibalds Crystal Domino Two lengths farther back A C Bostwicks Casting just beat Harry Payne Whitneys Whiskery for third thirdAlbert Albert Johnson did not add anything to his riding reputation when he piloted Irish Marine in the mile and a quarter of the fifth race This race fell to W A Rosens Laplander and it was a race that did not look at all well from the stand Irish Marine was second and Belphrizonia third with Lockerbie a recent twotime winner fourth fourthLaplander Laplander was permitted to steal away into a long lead while Johnson had Irish Marine under double wraps all down the back stretch Then at the turn for home he moved up with Landers plater and if he had ridden as he so well knows how to ride he could surely have caught Laplander but he did not give Irish Marine a Johnson ride and delayed his run until it was all over overAt At the end of the program there came a four and a half furlongs dash through the Widener Course for plater twoyearolds and the winner turned up in E M Byers Whis ¬ key Run To score he led home P H Faul ¬ coners Ibby and Sturdy Stella was the ono to be third
