Here and There on the Turf Belmont Candidates Rivals for Crusader P A Clarks Bargain Aurora Poison Case As the date for the running of the Belmont Stakes draws near interest in the big mile and a half race becomes more acute Of course it is natural that Crusader Samuel D Riddles Suburban Handicap winner still remains the most talked of eligible to the race But he is going to have anything but a walkover and there are several trainers who are not afraid to do him battle Tuesday Rock Man the Sagamore Stables eligible showed his readiness when after running a thoroughly creditable mile to finish third to Dangerous and Sunspero older horses to which he was giving weight finished out the mile and a half in 237 237This This practical trial for the Belmont Stakes vas a better one than the actual time would indicate for the reason that Rock Man was forcing the pace until well into the stretch and still went on for the additional half mile to finish steadily In a race of a mile and a half or a trial over such a route he would not have been asked to run as fast as he did through the first mile and naturally could have shaded the lime But what the move did demonstrate was that Rock Man is capable of racing a mile and a half with the best of them themThe The Preakness Stakes iended to show that Rock Man was principally notable for his speed rather than his staying ability Then in the Kentucky Derby when he was third to Bub ¬ bling Over and Bagenbaggage he showed stay ¬ ing power His race on Tuesday was his first start since the running of the Derby but Stotler has brought him to the Belmont Stakes in excellent condition and he ought to give a good account of himself in the race raceAnd And there is another of similar name Rock Star in the Brookmeade Stable that while lie has not had the racing of Rock Man this year had better be kept in mind for the Sat ¬ urday race This colt has been having a real old fashioned Gwyn Tompkins prep for the Belmont and thus far has done about all that has been asked like a high class colt Tomp ¬ kins developed Crusader and he should know better than anyone else the capabilities of the magnificent son of Man o War That should be a help in training one to do him battle battleThese These are only two of several that may be expected to race against Crusader and the winner of the Suburban Handicap cannot af ¬ ford to make any mistakes Saturday or his winning streak will be halted When P A Clark paid 1600 for a yearling filly by Glencairn Sun Kiss by Peep o Day he picked up one of the real bargains of the FasigTipton August auctions This filly is none other than Glen Sprite which races for Mr Pembroke the nom de course of Mrs P A Clark ClarkGlen Glen Sprite has been raced but three times and each time she has shown becoming im ¬ provement Beaten in her first start the next time she was sent to the post by William Hogan she won from a remarkably good band of fillies with H P Whitneys Frilette racing second Her only other start was in the Fash ¬ ion Stakes run at Belmont Park Tuesday and after setting practically all the pace she was narrowly beaten by H P Whitneys Pandera rated as one of the best fillies of the year yearFor For a 1600 yearling Glen Sprite is already a notable bargain and with this beginning she s likely to make her way brilliantly through the racing season seasonSome Some of the other twoyearolds that raced Tuesday that are probably destined to race to some degree of fame are Terry Pouter Potent Black Pepper and Boom These were all first time starters and unless all signs fail each one of them will not long remain in the maiden class classTerry Terry won like a good class colt He is a son of North Star III the sire of Bubbling Over and Seamstree a Star Shoot mare He was bred by George W Loft and races under the colors of Samuel Harris HarrisPouter Pouter which finished a good second is a chestnut son of John P Grier and Fantail by Ogden and was bred by Thomas Piatt He was purchased by James Cox Brady for his Hamilton Farm Stable for 7500 It would seem from his first racing effort that Pouter was a good buy He was a bit green Tuesday and is sure to improve over that good showing showingPotent Potent which raced for the Wheatley Stable is a well made son of Archaic and Gloriana by Meddler for which F Ambrose Clark paiil 8100 as a yearling Black Pepper is a slashing brown gelded son of Berrilldon and Angella K bred by the estate of the Jate Louis Garth He is still a bit high and he should fine down to a good class twoyearold The same may be said of John E Maddens Boom a handsome chestnut son of Huon and Flying Jib by Friar Rock RockAnd And still another shown Tuesday was Lo dina a bay daughter of Wildair and Adel by Burgomaster This miss was bred by and raced for Emil Herz Short Grass Stud Stable Ulysses G Young is under 6000 bond for the charges brought against him in connection with the poisoning of certain race horses at Aurora This same Young has said that he made some sort of restitution by paying 4000 and 3500 to the owners of two of the poisoned horses that died as well as 3200 and 1000 to the owners of two of the other horses that were poisoned but not fatally If this has been done it is commendable but the crime of poisoning was none the less heinous The slaughter of horses in this fashion cannot be paid for with money and it is to be hoped that Young will go a bit further and offer every assistance in bringing all the guilty ones in the brutal offense to just punishment punishmentNaturally Naturally all of those who are charged with any complicity have been ruled off the turf by the Aurora officials but what is wanted in addition to this punishment is a fitting punish ¬ ment by the courts This case should not be let rest until the last one of those guilty is brought to justice and the punishment should be such that it would be a lasting example to all wrongdoers Princess Doreen is back in her winning stride again and when she took the Flapper Purse at Latonia Tuesday it marked her second success in a row This good mare is getting a bit over the flapper age but she is still able to keep the best of the flappers busy This was a threequarters dash and Princess Doreen after following Teak put her away when ready to come home the winner winnerBut But what makes this mare such a prime favorite with the followers of racing is her ability to race over all distances and her unswerving honesty under colors Seldom in ¬ deed can a race be found in the long record of the daughter of Spanish Prince II and Lady Doreen where she has not raced honestly and resolutely even though beaten I
