CEDURNELTS DOUBLE Smiiing Gus and The Hovel Score for Him at Aurora First Mentioned Takes Harrington Handicap in New Track Rec ¬ ord Time for the Mile AURORA 111 June 9 With two victories to his credit the colors of Boots Durnell were again much in evidence at Exposition Park this afternoon Well ridden by jockey W Stamper Durnells Smiling Gus accounted for the Barrington Handicap the fifth and principal offering Cogwheel from the sta ¬ ble of Mrs E Wayland raced to second place and J B McGinns Pegasus was a bangup third The race was run in 1 39 a new track record recordPillager Pillager was sent to the front early and cut out the running until midway of the stretch with Pegasus and Cogwheel follow ¬ ing Smiling Gus avoided the early pace but moved up into a contending position after rounding the far turn He continued gamely on the outside of the leaders in the final eighth and got up in the closing strides to beat Cogwheel by a neck The latter held a similar margin over Pegasus at the end after the latter had shown in front an eighth out Pillager quit to a walk after being passed commencing the final eighth eighthSUM3IERLIKE SUM3IERLIKE AVEATHER AVEATHERReal Real summerlike weather prevailed and the other attending conditions were most favorable Another large crowd witnessed the sport sportThe The Hovel was the other Durnell color bearer to earn brackets The Kildare filly followed Biddy Shipp closely to the stretch gradually wore her down through the final eighth and drew away handily near the end Biddy Shipp retained a safe margin over the others Polyfena outstayed Embryo for the short end of the purse McDonough ran out on the top bend which ruined his chances chancesSanola Sanola made amends for her defeat on Saturday when she took the measure of some shifty sprinters in the Kaneville Purse the fourth race Miss Jennie and Sanola con ¬ tested the early leadership closely Agnes Call joined in the struggle an eighth out coming through next the inner rail In the final test Sanola proved the gamest and out ¬ lasted Agnes Call for the premier honors Red Heart came from far back in the stretch and was a fast finishing third Miss Jennie quit badly when the real struggle came cameTHIRD THIRD STRAIGHT FOR ROCKET ROCKETTaking Taking command at once Rocket showed the way by a comfortable margin at all stages of the third race which marked his third consecutive victory Finday raced more kindly today was a forward contender throughtout and despite having to race on the outside of the leaders she outstayed McCrimmon for second place Chesterbrook showed a creditable performance and was a bangup fourth fourthMy My Mary displayed keen speed through ¬ out the running of the first race and held his opponents safe all through the stretch In rounding the far turn she came across sharply interfering with Charles Whitney and Brown Betty The latter recovered quickly nad raced into an easy second in the stretch Floy Lillie worked her way up on the inside in the stretch and out gamed the tirign Charles Whitney for third thirdNicely Nicely rated in front for the entire way Mercutio was never seriously threatened dur ¬ ing the running of the sixth race which marked his fourth victory at this meeting Gus R was always in closest pursuit and was easily best of the others It was only after keen urging in the closing stages that Louis A succeeded in saving the small portion of the purse from the fast finishing Sea Court Mercutio lowered the track record for the mile and threesixteenths to 2OOVs 2OOVsCitizen Citizen displayed the most speed until well into the stretch in the concluding dash Mac ¬ lean which had gradually improved his posi ¬ tion after rounding the far turn nailed the tiring leader a sixteenth out and drew clear near the end to win by a length Citizen was tiring and doing his best to save second from Miss Rosedale which closed fast through the stretch after being shuffled back at tho start startJockeys Jockeys C Ilealy and P Cogan left to ¬ night for Akron accompanying their contract employers H E Brown and W McKinney respectively
