HAMILTON DERBY TO TOKEN Carries Green Briar Stable Colors to Notable Success Stablcmatc South Wind Finishes Second and andPun Pun jali Third Good Crowd Out for forOpening Opening at Hamilton HAMILTON Ont June 9 The Green Briar Stable of Winnipeg furnished the winner and the second horse in the Run ¬ ning of the Hamilton Derby which was decided here this afternoon under ideal weather conditions before a gathering of five thousand racing devotees Token was the one to gather in the major por ¬ tion of the stake and by this enriched his owner to the extent of 3540 while his stablemate South Wind by finishing second drew dovn 600 as her share of the spoils Punjab was third beaten by two lengths by the first two and his race was a creditable one in view of the fact that tie carried top impost over the mile and an eighth over a track that was somewhat slow from the rains of yesterday yesterdayFrom From a good start although somewhat sluggish in finding his racing legs the pride of the Seagram Stable and the leading two yearold of the Canadian racing season last year Gaffsman went into the lead going to the first turn closely pressed by Token which had the speed of the others around the first turn These two raced in front while the remainder of the field were somo distance back evidently waiting for one or the other to crack There was no change in the running positions until the half mile mark where both Punjab and South Wind moved up Punjab moved on the outside of the latter and was carried wide when Schaefcr permitted his mount to go wide entering the home stretch In the final drive Punjab could not gain any under his weight Token in the meantime had secured the lead from Gaffsman which quit badly and Peternel kept him at his task to make victory certain certainGOLD GOLD ROCK AX UPSET UPSETCharles Charles L Whitings Gold Rock furnished the days upset when he annexed the big share of the spoils in the running of the Salisbury Handicap which was carded as the fourth race the distance being three quarters After a short delay at the post the field was sent away in good alignment and Taylor astride the victor sent his mount into the lead before the field had gone a dozen strides Rounding the far turn he gave the son of Half Rock his head and he increased his lead to three lengths over the Seagram Stables Digit which had been in close attendance from the outset with thu favorite Robert Maxwell in third position and another three lengths back Gold Roclc was struck several times by Taylor at the eighth post to keep him at his task as Digit loomed up dangerously at this point and succeeded in getting within a length of the winner but he tired in the final strides and Robert Maxwell closing with belated speed outsprinted him and took second place by a scant head headArcgal Arcgal sadly overlooked in the wagering accounted for the second race which was for twoyearolds at fiveeighths She was forced to come from behind her rivals after racing wide in the early stages to find racing room but once settled in her stride she closed in game fashion and caught the tiring Sugar Master a sixteenth out and just managed to get up to earn a head verdict Sugar Master saved second place by a length and a half from Eda C which in turn outfinished the fast Sparkling Water WaterSTEEPLECHASE STEEPLECHASE WINXEU WINXEUW W G Wilsons Lieutenant Seas was forced to withstand a gruelling drive to account for the Mount Hope Steeplechase over the two mile course and for which seven paraded Ammunition held up the start somewhat by his unruly behavior while at the starting point he being accused oC unseating his rider J Blackburn and dashed away taking jumps over two obstacles in his endeavor to get away He was caught before any serious damage was done and remounted Cavendish with his early speed went into command after passing the second fence and showed the way until the final few jumps where he was collared by the oddson favorite and beaten by a head headJ J J Meyers Camouflage spreadeagled his opponents in the opening race 051 the pro ¬ gram in which there were twelve starters Reserved off the pace for the first half mile he went to the leaders with a rush when settled for the final effort and it was with very little trouble that he disposed of Glimmering At the end he was four lengths clear of the latter and could have made his margin a larger one had his rider so desired desiredF F D McElroy arrived here with the horses of the Woodlawn Stable which was formerly handled by J II Stotler Laddie Buck the swift running son of Rapid Water is the star of the string stringTommy Tommy Francis owner of Hot Pepper wired the racing secretary here to scratch his starter owing to being unable to secure transportation for the horse
