FLAT IRON REPEATS Gallops Mile in 137 to Defeat Old Slip at Louisville Genial Host and Wooldridge Stage Stirring Duel for Third Place Ferseth and Tractor Win LOUISVILLE Ky May 37 Flat Iron which races for the Greenbrier Stable of which the Winnipeg sportsman F D Shea is owner carried off the honors at Churchill Downs today when he won the Mapleton Mile Purse and outstayed Old Slip by a margin of half a length after a spectacular stretch duel that tested the prowess of Flat Iron and his rival as well as Chick Lang and the more aggressive W Crump respec ¬ tive riders on Flat Iron and Old Slip Fol ¬ lowing a dozen lengths in the wake of the leading pair were Genial Host and Wooldridge separated by inches Genial Host earning third place placeFlat Flat Iron was forced to race the fastest mile of the meeting when he reached the fin ¬ ish in 137 In his previous essay he had also shown the best mile and from a time standpoint when he raced the mile out of the chute called the fish hook mUe there be ¬ ing but two turns and almost fiveeighths straightaway course in 138 138Only Only five started with Old Slip being given preference in spite of former bad efforts Fiat Iron also had extensive support and he dominated the race from the start though at times Old Slips efforts gave promise of success for him The pair finally raced away from the others and when straightened out in the stretch began a duel that had the big crowd in a frenzy Flat Iron had a margin of inches beginning the last eighth and re ¬ sponded in game fashion to the lefthanded whip lashing that Lang imposed on his flanks but he could not get away from his rival which also was being punished severely by Crump They raced evenly in the next sixteenth and not until seventy yards from the finish did Old Slip begin to flinch and enable Flat Iron to attain a half length lead and keep that margin in advance to the finish finishCLEORA CLEORA JUVENILE WINNER Cleora running back to her previous good race was winner from La Dentelle Golden IFair and seven other maiden twoyearold fillies in the opening race Well ridden by G Johnson and showing the most speed from the start the winner led the way without being threatened for the entire distance de ¬ feating La Dentelle by a half length The latter raced in good form after beginning slowly and was rapidly wearing the winner down Golden Fair after beginning slowly raced around the others to follow in closest pursuit of the winner until the last sixteenth where she tired and lost second place to the fast finishing La Dentelle The Shoe String Stables Comrade and jockey Alfred Johnson were the winning combination in the second race which brought into competition at threequarters fifteen capable sprinters The field met under claimmg conditions and the winner registered in goingaway fashion after hav ing raced under restraint behind the pace for a half mile and was not required to give his best in disposing of Piccadilly in the last seventy yards Piccadilly was put to much use getting to the front in the first quarter but opened up a big gap when aprpoaching the last turn only to tire slightly when challenged Third place fell to Florida Gold which raced well out in the track and finished fast fastFERSETH FERSETH ALL THE WAY The fiveeighths race in which twoyear olds started resulted in a victory for Fer ¬ seth which under Crumps hustling tactics succeeded in leading for the entire distance to win from ICelnot which caine fast in the stretch and landed in advance of Trydor The latter had raced with the winner in the early stages but began tiring in the last eighth There was considerable activity about J S Wards Skipaway but any chance this filly might have had was completely spoiled by the bad ride that L Pichon gave her She began well from an inner position but Pichon began taking her back with the result that she was almost last when she reached the first turn He then raced her wide and when she was gaining fast in the stretch he brought her directly in the wake of the tiring Trydor and was forced to case her almost to a standstill to prevent jump ¬ ing on Trydors heels With a good ride it is probable that Skipaway would have won Tractor from the Island Farm Stable proved best in the fourth race Coming from bhind with a rush In the last quarter of a mile he overhauled the leaders and reached the finish a length in advance of Pandy Considerihg that Pandy had closely followed the pacemaker Starbeck sho hung on gamely with the result that she led King Gorin II a good length for second place The latter got up in the last few stridas to overhaul the tiring Starbeck which quit badly in the stretch Slarbeck carried throughout the race a nose rope which was applied at the barrier vrhere he acted badly
