GERRY COLORS IN FRONT Premier Outstays Cantankerous in Southampton Handicap Swizzlcstlck Repeats In Juvenile Race Win ¬ ning Easily From Whitney Fair Summer Weather Prevails NEW YORK N Y May 17 Premier carrying the silks of Robert L Gerrys Ak nusti Stable was winner of todays feature of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica when in a driving finish he scored in the Southampton Handicap from the Green tree Stables Cantankerous with A H Watermans Juggler an added starter fin ¬ ishing third The Southampton Handicap was a mile and a sixteenth race for three yearolds and was worth 5650 to the win ¬ ner nerThe The card was an interesting one and con ¬ ditions were Ideal for the sport though threatening clouds hung over the course all afternoon The going was fast and the crowd surprisingly large After Sweepster and Dolan had been withdrawn from the feature and Juggler added there were nine in the field Little time was lost at the barrier and the start was good with Pre ¬ mier beginning well and taking command at once Cantankerous began from the outside and Ellis hustled him away from the post to such good advantage that he was in second place when the first turn was reached The others were a couple of lengths back with Murzim Sun Hawk and Juggler racing closely lapped Juggler holding the inside berth berthEllis Ellis had a good hold on Cantankerous in the run down the back stretch but Premier was also under restraint as he raced along in front of him Then at the turn out of the back stretch Richards made a move to try and go through on the inside with Juggler only to be blocked and still Premier and Can ¬ tankerous continued to show the way wayTurning Turning into the stretch Ellis made his move with Cantankerous and as he did so McAtee shook up Premier with the result that he held his lead but he was plainly do ¬ ing his best In the final eighth Juggler was coming again but he was in close quar ¬ ters and tired slightly Cantankerous raced along gamely under top weight but Premier proved too much for him and he was still threequarters of a length to the good at the end Juggler after his bad luck was only beaten half a length for second place and three lengths further back was Architect from the Rosedale Stable down ¬ ing Wee Burn five lengths for fourth fourthThe The others were strung out and the real disappointment of the running was Sun Hawk from the Belair Stud Stable which had no speed at any stage of the race and finished far back backThe The fifth was a fiveeighths mile dash for twoyearold fillies and Swizzlestick from the Wheatley Stable taking command at the rise of the barrier was at no time seriously threatened to be home the winner by a length and a half from Harry Payne Whitneys Bonniebelle and Spy Glass another from the same stable was third beating Frank J Bastones Violet B for the short end of the purse purseWhen When McAuliffe had Swizzlestick off in infull full stride he made every use of that advan tage and shot her into a long lead It was Continued on twentieth page GERRY COLORS IN FRONT Continued from first page just as well that he made good use of his advantage for the Whitney fillies were not near as fortunate at the start and with better barrier manners they might have reversed the order at the finish finishBoth Both Bonniebelle and Spy Glass closed a big gap and finished so fast that there is no danger of either one remaining in the maiden class classAt At the end of the card Bob Smiths Phidias made all the pace for a mile and an eighth to lead home F M Kellys Friday 13th with John Lowes Mikado saving third from Gray ¬ lings Lady by a narrow margin marginSixteen Sixteen cheap platers met in the opening threequarters dash and Whiskey Run from the New Jersey Stable after racing with the pace all the way was the winner over Joseph Gorgas Winsome another pacemaker while Benny Rubin was third The three placed horses were in the front division from the rise of the barrier and Winsome after show ¬ ing the way into the stretch tired at the end to lose to Whiskey Run RunThe The others in the big field were badly strung out at the finish with Belcross so badly lamed that he was pulled up by C Allen who dismounted in the final furlong to lead his mount home homeThere There came another score for the Ran cocas Stable when Jumbo was winner over some smart ones in the second offering The daughter of Black Toney was going away at the end while Clifford A Cochrans Circlet beat Harry Payne Whitneys Color Sergeant for second place The three of them were well ahead of St Gcnevieve and Top Ser ¬ geant the only other starters startersIt It was the first appearance of the year for Color Sergeant and there was some apprehension when he appeared in the parade wearing four bandages The start was a good one but Color Sergeant was just a bit slow to be under way while Circlet was rushed into the lead Jumbo was in second place and racing under a nice restraint and the other two were close at hand Going to the far turn Abel moved up on the outside with Color Sergeant but Fator moved at the same time with Jumbo and the pair grad ¬ ually went to Circlet but the Cochran filly was still showing the way as the trio turned for home homeAn An eighth out Jumbo was alongside Circlet while Color Sergeant was hanging badly when Abel called on him for that stretch run Through that last eighth Circlet quickened her pace but Jumbo proved too much for her though she stuck it out to beat Color Sergeant Ten lengths further back were the other two starters soundly beaten beatenJohnny Johnny Callahan brought Sandy from the B B Stable home a handy winner in the threequarters of the La Fayette Handicap which was the third offering At the end Sandy was a length to the good while Apostle the Mahapoc Stable starter just nosed out Airs Jack Richardsons Giant for second place with the others following in strungout order orderGiant Giant was the one to cut out all the run ¬ ning hut Callahan was soon in second place after him while Apostle was lapped on the B B sprinter and the three were destined to dominate all the running runningIt It was not until swinging into the stretch that Callahan called on Sandy There Giant was still showing the way but as Callahan shook up his mount he quickly moved along ¬ side Collins tried to match the move with Apcstle but the son of Ambassador IV tired under the drive Through the last eighth Sandy drew out readily and it was only in the final strides that tiring Giant surrendered the second place to Apostle
