ENGAGE TRAINER J WHALEN NEW YORK N Y May 17 John Whalen has been engaged to train the Frenchbred horses that were purchased abroad and re ¬ cently arrived here for AMctor Emmanuel a newcomer to racing The horses are now stabled at Belmont Park and will be fitted for their engagements at that track Bar ¬ rett Haynes also signed to ride through the year for the stable The horses that Haynes had in his charge were turned over to W J Norton who handles the stable of C V B Cushman Haynes had announced his re ¬ tirement from the saddle and applied for a trainers license early this spring but re ¬ considered when offered the position as first string rider with Mr Emmanuel
