AUSPICIOUS BEGINNING AT WASHINGTON PARK GLORIOUS INAUGURAL Big Crowd on Hand to Welcome Return of Popular Sport Feature Provides Surprise in De ¬ feat of Prince of Wales and Victory of Girl Scout HOMEWOOD 111 June 1 Racing came back to Chicago with the opening of the long meeting of the Illinois Jockey Club at its Washington Park course this afternoon and while the weather was uncomfortably chilly there was a big crowd out to welcome the thoroughbreds back backThe The big event of the day the Washington Park Handicap over the threequarters dis ¬ tance resulted in something of a surprise when C E Durnells Girl Scout raced over E B McLeans Prince of Wales in the last sixteenth to be winner and Sanola from the Sanola Stock Farm whipped him for second place placeAn An even dozen went to the post and early in the action Prince of Wales found his way into the command The Heathen raced along with him to the stretch turn where he had enough and as he dropped back the son of High Time looked all over a winner but the early racing had taken something out of him and right at the end he tired tiredGirl Girl Scout had worked her way up reso ¬ lutely and right at the end she forced her way through after having offered some interference to Sanola on the stretch turn Prince of Wales had no trouble saving third when he was a full three lengths before Nor easter which was never able to enter seri ¬ ously into the contention The others followed in rather badly strung out order orderCOLOXEL COLOXEL WINX OPTIMISTIC OPTIMISTICColonel Colonel Matt Winn who was on hand for the opening of the Wzishington Park meeting expressed a confidence that with more favor ¬ able weather the racing will continue to grow in popularity at the Homewood course He left later for Latonia to be on hand for that meeting of the Kentucky Jockey Club ClubOne One of the proverbial blanket finishes was witnessed in the Promenade Purse for two yearolds which was third on the program This contest was keenly contested every inch of the way with the La Brae Stables Polita having the most speed and retaining a slight margin of lead racing next the inner rail Birdwood and American Thunder were in close pursuit and forced a fast pace Inside the last threesixteenths Birdwood tired and dropped out of it while American Thunder began racing wide and bearing out some ¬ what PoKta continued to retain her small margin of lead to the finish and just lasted to stall off strong closing challenge of Drcana Lee Dreana Lee slipped through be ¬ tween the leaders in the stretch and wearing the winner down rapidly just missed getting up at the end She managed to head Ameri ¬ can Thunder in the last strides for second place placeThe The afternoons sport was inaugurated with a victory for the J X Camden stable when that owners silks were carried to the finish in advance of the others represented in the race by the threeyearold filly Flattery Trainer Roscoe Goose saddled the winner and lifted the diminutive rider J Bollero into the saddle and sent them out to try conclu ¬ sions with the eight other starters Flattery finishing with rare gameness was up in the closing stages to overtake the early pace ¬ maker Big Sweep and she downed him in the final few yards of a driving finish Big Sweep ridden by jockey Earl Pool held on well for second place Red Grange raced for wardly with the front rank from the start and holding on determinedly at all stages lasted to save third place placeimOOMSTEU imOOMSTEU IX FORM FORMW W L Drakes veteran sprinter Broomster displayed a flash of his best form and sprinted to a rathe tasy victory in the sec ¬ ond race also a dash of threequarters R 1 Bakers Updike proved the strongest con ¬ tender and finished second while third was the award of F S Pages Teton Broomster was away fast at the start and assumed a good lead in the first quarter mile Updike and Ball Gee were racing in nearest proxi ¬ mity of the leader to final turn Rounding it Broomster raced very wide entailing a serious loss of ground and Updike reached his flank and drew on apparently even terms with him when straightened out for home Broomster quickly became settled in his best stride again and set out for the finish in a commanding manner Updike was oon shaken off and Droomster again began to draw away easily and came to the finish two lngths in advance of Updike and was victory by the fiveyearold Cudgeller Magic Wand finished right in the wake of the winner and was only beaten a nose in the final strides for the purse J J Coughlins surprising filly Fan ¬ nie May finished in third place placeFannie Fannie May set the pace for the first half mile where Cudgeller then passed her and assumed command Magic Wand was racing back among the others under steady re ¬ straint Upon entering the stretch Cudgeller was two lengths in front and appeared to be racing well Magic Wand meanwhile put away another contender in J Fred A while Fannie May had dropped into third place Cudgeller suddenly tired a sixteenth out and the fast finishing Magic Wand forced Cud ¬ geller to do his best to keep going to the finish in advance and hold his rapidly dwin ¬ dling lead Cudgeller just lasted to win by a nose Fannie May held on gamely and easily outstayed the remainder for the minor award awardR R L Rogers Hopeless fresh from a suc ¬ cess at the Churchill Downs course broke into the winning column here by virtue of his success in the sixth race at one mile Hopeless easily defeated Cartoon and Dimple Dunkie in the final stages of a hard fought race raceJockey Jockey Pendergrass carried off riding hon ¬ ors for the day when after having ridden the winner in the second race he scored a double when he piloted Lady Braxted to vic ¬ tory when the latter won in a canter in the final race Stoneage raced to second place while Ma joe lasted for third
