FINALE AT CHURCHILL FiftyThird Annual Meeting Comes to an End at Downs Course Creek Indian Bests Cotlogomor in inSpirited Spirited Finish in Au Revoir RevoirHandicap Handicap Feature Race LOUISVILLE Ky June 1 The fifty third annual spring meeting ended this after ¬ noon at historic Churchill Downs with an ex ¬ ceptionally large crowd out to witness the twentysecond and final days racing offered under a cloudy sky and over a slow track While small fields vied for honors in all of the races the sport was good and a fitting finale for one of the most successful meet ¬ ings ever held at the track The meeting was remarkable in many respects nohe more so than for the recordshattering patronage that convincingly attested to the increasing popularity of racing in this section The meeting saw new attendance figures for practically every day over the correspond ¬ ing days of previous meetings and the sport was clean and possessed of more than re ¬ quired contention to provide interesting en ¬ tertainment tertainmentAs As the feature of the final day the rac ¬ ing secretary offered a dash of seveneighths for which five of the better grade perform ¬ ers started under hapdicap weights weightsThe The headliner was styled the Au Revoir Handicap and resulted in a victory for Creek Indian victor in a driving finish from Cotlogomor and Percentage PercentageSIR SIR PETER PROMINENT PROMINENTAfter After the first fiveeighths during which Sir Peter was a prominent factor the race developed into a threecornered affair the early leader Percentage being disposed of by both the winner and Cotlogomor in the final eighth Percentage took a rather lengthy lead in the first threeeighths but Creek Indian and Cotlogomor were capable of overtaking him in the stretch despite the fact that the Parrish colt held on tenacious ¬ ly after being supplanted by his more suc ¬ cessful opponents The winner ran the dis ¬ tance in 1 2G over the dull going and was given a good ride by Dent Smith SmithThe The race carried a purse of 2000 and sup ¬ port scattered Cotlogomor going to the post a slight favorite over Percentage PercentageThe The opening race a dash of threequarters for platers was productive of a mild sur ¬ prise when Nama won in easy fashion from Seminola with Dark Angel third The win ¬ ner was forced to race from far back but saved ground by slipping through on the inside improving her position and her rush In the stretch permitted her to take com ¬ mand before reaching the last sixteenth Seminola raced into an easy lead soon after the start but tired when the stretch was reached and was rather lucky to save sec ¬ ond place from the fast finishing Dark Angel AngelWHITNEY WHITNEY VICTORY VICTORYSesqui Sesqui from the H P Whitney Stable was returned the winner after a hard race with six other maiden twoyearolds that op ¬ posed him at fiveeighths in the second race His margin of victory was a head with Fellowship rapidly wearing him down as they made their way past the finish The latter was probably best and but for his swerving after reaching the stretch W Lil ley probably would have had him in advance of the winner at the end of the race Mer rick which finished in third place after showing the most early speed raced greenly and his endeavor to bear out at the stretch turn resulted in his bumring Sesqui which was moving past him on the outside outsideThe The third race witnessed the second suc ¬ cess of the Whitney silks when Swordsman easily accounted for top honors over Copper shine Phil Foto and six other platers S Stretton brought the winner from behind the pace in the last threeeighths and had him to the finish two lengths in front of Copper shine The latter had a rough journey and tired after nearing the lead in the stretch Phil Foto was a forward factor in the run ¬ ning the full distance but did much to obtain an early prominent place by crowding Cop pershine at the first turn turnThe The poor riding of Tchadflyer by W Lauscher marred the fourth lace in which the J L Knight twoyearold suffered de ¬ feat He was led to the finish of the five eighths by a halflength by Gloria Aspin after Lauscher had taken him far out of it soon after the start and closed an immense gap with the colt in the last quarter He was speedily making his way into the lead and downed Nine Dollars by a halflength for second place the latter tiring after setting the pace for a halfmile halfmileW W Lauscher rode his second winner of the day when Nabisco was victor of the sixth race He brought Nabisco from behind the leaders after having him under steady re ¬ straint for three quarters and after drawing into the lead in the stretch responded to urging in the last seventy yards to stall o Hilary The latter had to close an immense gap as a result of his slow beginning and was slowly closing the gap that separated him from the leaders as he finished Fusi leer which raced close to thc leaders from the outset held on gamely for third place in the final drive
