June 1 W R Coes Pompey failed miserably in the running of the Grcenport an overnight handicap at one mile for threeyearolds and over nt 3clmont Park this afternoon He finished second to Harry Payne Whitneys Frilette a daughter of Man o War Frillery while Charles Francks Priceman was third Th defeat of Pompey and the poor showing of Cherry Pie furnished more than the usual quota of thrills that accompany any one race The Greenport attracted more interest than the Harlem which carried the largest mone ¬ tary reward rewardIn In the running of the Greenport Pompey jad no excuses Away well and racing along under steady restraint he tired badly when Coltiletti went to the whip at the stretch turn and was hard ridden to stave off the rush of Mceman to save second place Frilette was in well at the weights and displayed plenty of speed throughout She secured clear pass ¬ age along the inner rail the first eighth and moved into the lead Goodwin allowed her to race along with a head advantage over Pom ey while the others were some distance jack Turning for home Pompey was urged into the lead and secured a half length ad ¬ vantage Frilette however was not done and responded to pressure She assumed com ¬ mand again after being straightened out and despite Coltilettis efforts he could not hold he advantage Priceman moved up stoutly on the outside and was going fast at the end and was a scant head back of the Coe fouryearold at the finish Cherry Pie from which much was expected showed a dull per ¬ formance throughout and finished a poor last lastCHILLY CHILLY ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHEREA A cold wind swept the course but the track was at its best The attendance was larger than Tuesday TuesdayA A spirited finish came out of the third race which engaged a field of the better grade of platers in the renewal of the Har ¬ em at one mile and the winner proved to je Jefferson Livingstons McAuliffe ridden by Goodwin over P S P Randolphs Lan ¬ yard while E M Byers Houston was third thirdThe The field was extremely fractious at the post and left in poor elignment with Houston he first away Walls took every advantage of the break and allowed the Byers starter to assume a commanding lead Supersede an added starter which broke in a tangle was rushed from last place into contention the first quarter mile and essayed to go along with Houston The early effort was too much and rounding the turn he faltered falteredMcAuliffe McAuliffe was racing along under restraint and nearing the stretch turn moved up stoutly Houston bore out badly and Mc ¬ Auliffe followed him out while Lanyard tiugged the inner rail Houston continued to bear out through the stretch and McAuliffe was right after him The pair staged a bitter duel and Houston was the first to give way He faltered under punishment and at the end dropped back McAuliffe finished with a loose rein and had enough left to outlast Lanyard which closed stoutly Lan ¬ yard had a narrow margin over Houston for the place portion of the purse purseJ J N Levins furnished the winner of the first race which engaged a field of eighteen twoyearold maidens when Clairdine ridden by G Fields outlasted Bud Fishers Chin ¬ chilla in the final drive with W T Ander ¬ sons Santa Sweep third The victory was the first scored by the popular little sports ¬ man and it proved a fitting one The field was a bulky one and with the exception of Go Bang well mannered at the barrier When the start came Go Bang wheeled and was left leftGladys Gladys Clark was away rapidly but quickly met with interference and dropped back and Clairdine moved into the lead She was hustled along all the way and stood off de ¬ termined opposition from Chinchilla The later moved up with splendid courage an eighth from the finish but once on even terms with the winner tired badly but held Santa Sweep safe The latter raced along the inner rail all the way and had a wide margin over Gladys Clark which finished stoutly when settled in her stride strideANOTHER ANOTHER FOR GREENTREK STABLE STABLEThe The Greentree Stabe accounted for another steeplechase when Brantome was winner of the Good and Plenty over the twomile course Ridden by Specs Crawford his victory came after a hard drive in which he beat Bethany from the Grassland Stable while Erne II a stablemate of the winner was third over J E Wideners Barleycorn Rip and Attila II completed the field and at no stage of the running were serious factors factorsBethany Bethany displayed a high flight of early speed and good form over the jumps and drew away into a commanding lead while Crawford was content to race Brantome along under steady restraint leading Barley ¬ corn and his stablemate The identical run ¬ ning positions were maintained for the first turn of the field and it was not until after the ninth fence had been negotiated that Brantome was sent after the leader Bethany was going along smoothly and Crawford was forced to work his way up on the out ¬ side sideRacing Racing for the last jump the leaders were almost on even terms although Bethany was the first over Brantome responded to pres ¬ sure and through the final seventy yards assumed the lead but was ridden out to hold Bethany safe The latter came again and finished with determination while Erne II was put to a drive to dispose of Barley ¬ corn The latter tired in the final eighth Rip was a distant last while Attila II failed to finish the course He was pulled up after taking the eleventh fence and dis ¬ mounted He walked off decidedly lame lameJefferson Jefferson Livingston completed a double when Complication was returned the winner of the fifth race which was for twoyear olds over the four and a half furlong dis ¬ tance of the Widener course He outlasted Mrs J Garsons Eddie Ahearn
