BREAKS ATTENDANCE MARK Ladies Day at Blue Bonnets Sees Largest Turnout in Years. - r C. I,. Whitings Dignus Leads All the Way in Forest and Stream Handicap, Stellar Attraction of Afternoons Program. MONTREAL, Que., June 21. Ladies Day brought out an immense gathering to Blue Bonnets this afternoon. It exceeded in number the crowd that turned out on Saturday and established a new record in numbers over the Montreal Jockey Clubs track. A program in keeping with the occasion was provided and stirring contests were in order. Outsiders still managed to hold sway and a majority of the contests found favorites beaten. The Forest and Stream Handicap, a dash of threerquarters, was the stellar attraction; C. L. Whitings Meridian filly Dignus threatened to make a runaway affair of it, leading her rivals from the rise of the barrier and, sprinting into a commanding lead the first eighth, she held command of the situation throughout. At the end she was tiring a "bit, but lasted long enough to stall off Rolls Royces challenge, to win by three parts of a length. Patricia J. was third, beaten a couple of lengths for second place. Patricia J., as usual, broke slow and was badly outrun in the early stages. She finished in resolute fashion arid nailed Worthmore for the short endprf the purse in the final stride. It was a mighty tight- fit between these two. The race was marked by a fast early pace, the fractional time being :22 and the half-mile in :46. t . TOTARA A SURPRISE. Five juveniles answered .the .call. for. the five-eighths dash that was. the initial race on the program and an upset came when Totara smothered her rivals with speed and ledthroughout, to be returned the winner in a mild drive, crossing the finishing line just three lengths to the good of the odds-on favorite, Out Step. The latter failed to show her customary dash- in getting away from the barrier and she was never able to get to the front at any stage of the journey. Although she made a sharp challenge- at the eighth post, where she drew to within a length of the Victor, she weakened and was under severe pressure to hold second place from Sam Slickj which took down the minor end of the purse, with the others well beaten. Ten starters faced the barrier for the second race, at seven-eighths, in which the conditions called for each of "trie contestants to have the" services of a rider that had .never ridden a winner. The race proved a very interesting one throughout. "Fire Dog, ridden by PlK Richard, was -the one to emerge victorious and at the end enjoyed a five-lengths lead over Sphericity, which raced to second place, just managing to beat Northern Star. The first two made all the early pace and it was apparent that one of them would be returned- the winner, as a good gap was opened up by them in the early running. When the real issue came. Fire Dog easily shook off Sphericity and came away to score in easy fashion. Crimdus, the medium of a coup being backed down from 30 to 1 to close at .2 to 1 at post time met with early Interference and finished in fourth place. COONCAW GAMELY Cooncan, installed af topheavy choice for the one mile third race that attracted a rather cheap band, made good after he set the pace throughout and, withstanding a drive in game fashion, just managed, to get home half a length to the good of Lady Essington. Third money fell to Ranock, which came with a rush right at the end and was well lapped on the leaders as the finish mark was reached. An accident occurred during the running when Turner, one of the contestants, fell at the turn Into the backstretch and jockey S. Bulcroft was thrown to the ground. This marked the second time that Bulcroft suffered a fall at this track. His previous one was made last autumn while astride Lisab, which races for A. M. Roy. Eight well-known route racers faced the barrier in the fourth race, which was decided over the mile route and under claiming conditions and, with the running came the biggest upset of the afternoon when Shepherd of the Hills, conceded but little chance, surprised when he raced into the lead shortly after the start and, save for a brief period when Phanariot took a slight lead, the winner was always in command and, under a gruelling drive, just managed to outstay the Seagram colorbearer. Uncertain was third, coming with a rush in the last half mile. Goldbeater, one that had much support, failed badly, as did The Vintner. This race far overshadowed any other but the featured Forest and Stream Handicap, and the race proved a worthy supplementary feature. The announcement has been made that Clem McCarthy will act as racing secretary at the Delormier Park meeting and that Gene Bury will officate as presiding steward.
