SWEEPSTER WINS BY A HEAD Outstays Kentucky n., to Score in Shevlin. Stakes. Aqueduct Feature Revolves Into Two-Horse I Race Chuctannnda Handicap Furnishes Thrills. " AQUEDUCT, N. Y., June 21. Swcepster, racing in his best form, and under a magnificent ride by Laverne Fator, was winner of the one mile Shevlin Stakes at .Aqueduct this afternoon when he scored by a head from A. C. Schwartz English-bred Kentucky II., ridden by Johnny Mai ben. The race was worth ,250 to the winner, and the only other starters were Cheops, a stablemate of Sweepster, from the Rancocas Stable, and Marshall Fields good filly Nimba, winner of the American Coaching Club Oaks and rated the best of her sex and age. This was the third running of the Shevlin Stakes, which is named in memory of the late James Shevlin, one time president of. the Queens County Jockey Club. It was also the second score for the Rancocas silks, for the first running in 1925 fell to Silver Fox. The race was won by Macaw, from the H. P. Whitney stable last year. There was a return of delightful summer weather and the big crowd that was out for the sport was entertained by many a thrilling finish during the running of the program, but the Shevlin- Stakes was the best, of them all, even though it was really a two-horse race. Cheops and Nimba were far back at the finish. It was also a swiftly run mile when 1 :37 was the time hung out, while it was timed privately in 1 :36. SWEEPSTERS FAST RACE. The start was an excellent one and Fator ;at.once went out to set the pace with Sweepster. arid he made it a fast one when the son of Sweep raced the first quarter in :22, the half in :46 and the three-quarters in 1 :10. While this killing pace was being set by the winner, Maiben had Kentucky II. racing along on the rail two lengths back. It was a great finish that came out of the first race, a five-eighths dash for juveniles, when James Ingrams Miss Boyd, in a game finish, just nosed out Mrs. R. P. Shaffers Star Rocket, while Mrs. J. Zoellers Philips .First saved third from Bud Fishers Jim Bell. Miss Boyd forced all the pace, while Star Rocket was under pressure most of the way to keep alongside of her. Right at the end the filly was tiring slightly, but Star Rocket could not quite make it, though he was only beaten a matter of inches. There was a great thrill come out of the six and one-half furlongs of the Chuctanunda Claiming Handicap when H. Teller Archi- balds Candy Pig, the Mahopac Stables Apostle and Louis Feustels Peter Fiz finished so closely lapped in the order named that there was doubt of the actual order until the numbers were displayed. There was delay at the post, for which Clearance was chiefly to blame and in one of his wild lunges he unseated Burke. He was taken to the outside post position, which is a decided handicap from the six and one-half furlongs mark. As the barrier was released Germaine Chauvelot was first to show out of the bunrh and, saving ground next to the rail, she led for the best part of the first eighth, but Peter Fiz was right after her and he soon nad her put away, Clearance, despite his leaving the post from a bad post position, was rushed around the big field until for an instant he showed in second place, but that took considerable out of him and he was tiring when the stretch was reached. Peter Fiz held to his lead until well inside the final sixteenth, but there he began to bear out rather badly and both Candy Pip and Apostle, both inside of him, charged up until all three were locked. Had Peter Fiz run straight through the last twenty yards, he would have been the winner, but he just bore out enough to be nosed out by the other two. Clearance saved third, but he was three lengths back of the first two. HERODIAN TO THE FORE. W. R. Coes sprinter Herodian stuck it out for the mile distance of the second race, which was for non-winners of two races, and he was first by a couple of lengths over J. E. Wideners Broadside, one that came out of the running badly lamed, with Forever and Ever, from the Xalpha Farm Stable, beating Jefferson Livingstons Marylander rather handily for third. On the way to the post in this, New Years Eve, an English-bred filly, making her first start in this country, ran off with Bullman and had covered five-eighths before she wa3 pulled up. When the barrier was released, Herodian at once jumped into the lead, and it was a lead he was never to surrender. Retaliate and Broadside were the ones to go after the Coe colt, and Marylander was not far away. Forever and Ever was racing strongly on the outside and the others were in fairly close order, with the exception of New Years Eve, which soon dropped out of the race badly beaten. . There was some- closing up on the stretch turn and there Hat Brush, the starter from the Arden Farm Stable, ran out badly with Ray and dropped completely out of the running before he could be straightened out Broadside was in second place and Sonde was hard at work on him in an effort to catch Herodian, and Marylander tired as Forever and Ever came with a determined rush on the outside that landed him. safely in third place. The close finishes continued to the fifth race when G. C. Winfreys Jack Higgins just beat home E. Milherz Fred Parker in the five-eighths dash, for two-year-old maidens. This brought out a field of nineteen and Fred Parker had the outside position, which is something of a handicap in such races, but he was particularly alert at the start and Robbins was able to cross tho field to the inside with him and he was showing tho way to the closing strides. It was right at the end that the handsome son of Ballot tired, while Jack Higgins, finishing further out In the track, outgamed him to be first in tho closing strides. Sun Edwin, the Willis Sharp Kilmer starter which had not raced since the Havre de Grace meeting, was the one to save third. Frank Baccioco, well known to every visitor at Oriental Park as tho "Maestro of the Ring," was an arrival yesterday at Aqueduct He has returned recently from short visit to California.
