PLATER DAY PROGRAM «. . Entertainment at Fairmount Park Furnished by Ordinary Horses. ♦ — — Polygamia Takes Best Race After Stirring Stretch Drive With Vellas — Track Perfect. A COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 28.— Racing was of the ordinary variety today, and the absence of star performers was conspicuous. The finishes in several instances were of the close variety, so close, in fact, that on one occasion some of the public differed with the judges. This happening came in the third race, won by Black A.gate, from Be Still. The sport was under most perfect conditions, weather and track being perfect. The course was at its best and the track record for four and a half furlongs went by the board when Petit Pan, a maiden youngster, established a new mark of :54% for the distance. The fifth race, at three-quarters, attracted the most attention and six highly rated ones started, with Polygamia an outstanding favorite. She was returned the winner, but only after a hard effort to down Vellas, with Memoria also close up and challenging the leading pair. Polygamias success might have been accomplished in more easy style but for her rider electing to race her wide after ne had taken back sharply soon after the start. Vellas, as a result, moved into a long lead and, holding on better than expected, caused Polygamia to do her best to get up in the final strides to gain tho victory. TARGEE BY A NOSE. The first race, which found eleven starters racing three-quarters, resulted in a nose victory for Yargee over Love Pirate, with Forenoon in third place. The winner attained his victory mainly as a result of saving much ground by staying close to the inner rail. Love Pirate and Forenoon both lost ground swerving out. Both would probably have beaten the winner had they continued a straight course. The second race brought maiden two-year-olds to the barrier and the winner turned up in E. J. OConnells Petit Pan, which led the favorite. Bare Knees, for the entire distance and won easily. Bare Knees was much better than the others and finished eight lengths in advance of Demon. The winner raced fast from the start and concluded the four and a half furlongs in :54%, which was better by two-fifths of a second than the former mark. Pocket Mouse, a veteran in these parts, made his appearance for the first time in a considerable period and was successful in keeping in advance of the others to win handily from Whiskey Run and Suky. Pocket Mouse was the favored one and he displayed good speed, racing promptly into a good lead, and held on fairly well when urged. There was considerable betting activity about Suky, but that racer began slowly and was raced wide, but succeeded near the end in outstaying Edith Gray, though it was quite an effort for her to do so. Eligibles for the Fairmount Derby now on the grounds are : Bobashela, Chancellor, Sister Ship, Marsh Violet, Leyland, Jacksonville, Jack Higgins, Algernon, Dodgson, Typhoon, Misstep. Mop Up, Lucky Hit, Lieutenant Mansfield. I. Davis, Galahad and The Show Off.
