ROSEDALE STABLE TRIUMPH — ♦ Sanford Races Brilliantly to Win Sun Briar Handicap. ♦ — Defeats "Dolan by a Noss In "Driving Finish at Belmont Part — Henrietta Wildalr la Front. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 28.— In a driving finish Sanford, from the Rosedale Stable, just nosed out E. F. Cooneys Dolan in the best offering at Belmont Park today. This was the one mile Sun Briar Handicap, and the only other starter, Joseph E. Wideners Kiev, was well beaten. The rain of Sunday gave the course no chance to dry out and the going was muddy, resulting in several withdrawals during the day, though no race suffered as did the handicap. It was a day of interesting sport and the crowd was of goodly proportions. No time was lost at the post in the Sun Briar Handicap and as the three left Sanford propped ever so slightly, while Dolan and Kiev sped away in the same stride. Kiev showed the way and was under steady restraint, while Dolan raced alongside under restraint and a couple of lengths before Sanford. This order was maintained until the stretch turn, where Kiev had enough and dropped back well beaten, leaving Dolan clear and appearing the winner. Fator had not given up with the old horse and Sanford responded gamely to his call. Stride by stride he drew up on Dolan, but it was not until the final strides that he dropped his nose down in front to be winner. Logan Denny saddled a good juvenile for T. W. OBrien in the opening four and one-half furlongs dash, over the Widener course, when he sent Air Chief to the post. Beginning well this fellow went into an early lead and was at no time threatened, to win by a length and a half over the Rancocag Stables Grey Chief, with Samuel Ross, Shepherdess, the one to race third. Fourteen horses raced over the short course steeplechase and afforded a fine contest, with Mrs. C. V. B. Cushmans Ragweed the winner rather handily over Hitchcocks Oarsman, while Brice, from the Brookmeade Stable, saved third from V. Smyths Herod Antipas, which, in turn, led II. W. Maxwells Fittula home. Three horses came to grief in the running. Miss Peggie B. Baileys Belgen-land was a keen contender to the last fence, where he came down heavily with Charlie Mergler. Walter J. Salmons Fair Class unseated J. Fitzgerald at the sixth fence, while F. Bogan was unseated from Joseph E. Wideners Arc Light at the first fence. Game little Henrietta Wildair won another race for the Rosedale Stable when she led home a band of fillies in a three-quarters dash through the Widener course. At the end she was showing the way to Darkness, from the Rappahanock Stable with Lee Rosenbergs Dicing in third place. Henrietta Wildair began well and set the pace throughout. Stefally was close after her until well inside the final eighth, where the Brookmeade filly tired and Henrietta Wildair came away, while Darkness was the only one to give her the semblance of a contest in the final stages of the dash. There were two claims in the final race on Friday. J. P. Smith took Royal Stranger from Max Silvers for ,500, and Union Jack was taken from the Sage Stable by David Brooks for ,000.
