Wiedekamp, who will be in charge of the mutuel department, was an arrival from Churchill Downs Tuesday and immediately began looking after the details connected with his department at Washington Park. Colonel Matt J. Winn and general manager C. W. Hay put in a busy afternoon at Washington Park supervising the numerous details necessary to a successful opening. Mr. Winn expressed himself well-pleased with the progress being made to complete the extensive building program and feels certain that the opening next Monday will find the huge plant finished to every specification. President John Shanck of the Hawthorne track returned Tuesday from his visit to the Kentucky Derby and to Lexington, where he inspected some of his recent foals, sired by Lord Granite. He was well pleased with his Kentucky visit He announced that the extensive improvements for Hawthorne are well under way. The chief building is the addition of ninety feet to the club house and when this enlargement is finished, the club house will have a length of 300 feet. George A. Doll, who will be in charge of the mutuel department at Arlington Park, was an arrival from Maryland and at once began supervising the rebuilding of the mutuel department on the extensive north side plant. There was considerable activity at the Washington Park track during the afternoon on account of the constantly arriving stables. New York comers swelled the eastern aggregation and included the sixteen horses that will be campaigned in the colors of William du Pont. Steve Judge, with the S. H. Ginsberg band, and A. A. Kaiser were others from the East. George W. Bayberry, with the G. W. Church aggregation of fifteen, expects to place many a purse to the credit of the Californian. Another from the Pacific Coast that expects to cut a wide swath in the Washington Park racing is A. A. Baronni. The deflections from Aurora were numerous and included the stables of P. Reuter, C. Laurence and C. P. Winfrey. Tuesday there were 400 horses at Washington Park and a like number is expected to reach the extensively rebuilt course by the opening, Monday. There are also nearly 300 horses at Lincoln Fields that will take part in the Washington Park racing.
