SALMON IN FAMILIAR ROLE Leads Pimlico Owners by Success of His Preakness Starter. * WkMrtkf Sliihlc Finishes Second Through Tielorj- of Diavolo in the Dixie — Total Distribution 1250,170. « The Maryland Jockey Club, during its spring meeting of twelve days, distributed a total of 50,170, a handsome daily distribution of 1,317.50. This meeting has on its annual calendar the Dixie Handicap and the Preakness Stakes, the winners of which naturally top the lists of successful owners and horses. The name of W. J. Salmon, owner of Dr. Freeland, winner of the Preakness, is not at all an unfamiliar one at or near the top of the owners list. His Display won this same fixture back in 1926. This hcrse is the largest money-winner of all horses now in competition. During this meeting Display contributed the modest sum of ,000 by finishing third in the Dixie Handicap. The Preakness, the larger of the two big stakes of this meeting, was worth 2,325 to Mr. Salmon. Other successes of his horses, including a previous victory by Dr. Freeland, gave this owner a total of 9,875. Diavolo, the four-year-old son of Whisk Broom II., defeated a great field in the Dixie Handicap and took down 7,000, which put the AVhoatley Stable in second place in the owners list This stable figured only modestly in the money in one other race. Third and fourth places went to the Audley Farm Stable and Mrs. W. M. Jeffords. The Audley Farm owed its position to victories of Bobashela in the Jennings Handicap, and Altitude, in the Pimlico Oaks. Mrs. Jeffords big winner was due to the two-year-old filly Good as Gold, which won the Pimlico Home-Bred and Pimlico Nursery Stakes. A. C Schwartz Sortie won the Pimlico Spring Handicap. The Warm Stable, which not long ago bought Victorian and The Nut from H. P. Whitney, did not win a race, but Victorians second in the Dixie was worth ,000. and The Nut contributed a little more. Mint Olga won the Spring Juvenile Stakes for W. S. Kilmer. Charles Graffagnini, with an outsider in the betting in the colt Minotaur, ranked well up with the larger racing establishments and had he not sold Minotaur just a short time before the colt finished second in the Preakness he would have been up with the first three or four. Minotaur was the third largest winner among the Pimlico starters, with a total of 0,240. Jockey F. Catrone nosed out G. Fields, eight winners to seven. With twenty-nine mounts, Catrone was unplaced only twelve times. Complete statistics of the Pimlico spring meeting follow: Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Amt.
