BONUS A GREAT INCENTIVE 1 » Classic Offers More to Winner of I One of Four Big Stakes. ♦ Dr. Freeland and Clyde Va; Dusen So Far I Qualify Im the 0,000 Extra of Arl-iugton Park Feature. * — . Clyde Van Dusen, gallant son of Man o War and Uncles Lassie, which triumphed in the Kentucky Derby, is among the high class three-year-olds that have been named for the i American Classic, which valuable stake fixture for three-year-olds is to have its in- i augural at Arlington Park, July 13. Naisha-pur. Panchio and Blue Larkspur, and practically ali of the other contestants in last Saturdays .stake at Louisville, are also included in the list of eligibles to the Arlington stake. Among the other eligibles can be found the Preakness field, including Dr. Freeland. winner of the Pimlieo stake, together with Minotaur and African, which finished second and third respectively in the race. Both Dr Freeland and Clyde Van Dusen have, by their recent stake victories, qualified as contestants for the 0,000 that the American National Jockey Club will present to the winning owner of the American Classic in addition to the original endowment of 0,000 in the event that the winner has previously scored in any of the seasons other great specials for three-year-olds. The Kentucky Derby. the Preakness, American Derby and Belmont Stakes — all of which antedate the American Classic in their running. Should a winner of any of these races succeed in scoring in the American Classic, the latter race should have an approximate gross value of 3,500, of which the winner will receive close to 3,000, making it the richest of the specials for three-year-olds to be decided during the year. And from a racing and sporting viewpoint it promises to be the most important, for it will bring into competition all of the star performers engaged in the preceding specials, f r the final and decisive test that should determine the years three-year-old championship. And among its contestants will be fourd a number of absentees from the other four great races, . who will have reached the peak of their . three-year-old form, by the time the day for the decision of the Classic rolls around. CONDITIONS DIFFERENT. The conditions of the American Classic are " framed somewhat different from those in the other four specials for three-year-olds. The J latter are all races with 126 pounds the regulation weight, while the Arlington Park stake conditions with allowances will bring the • starters together carrying varying weights 5 from 126 pounds downward. Thus, the contestants will be weighted in accordance with 1 what they have accomplished as three-year-olds. Dr. Freeland and Clyde Van Dusen, by virtue " of their recent stake victories, which J netted their owners an amount in excess of E 5,000, are not entitled to any allowances, and therefore will both have to shoulder the 1 regulation weight of 126 pounds, if they start J in the Classic. Those horses that have not 1 won the above amount in a race for three-year-olds are entitled to an allowance of £ three pounds, which will make their weight 1 123 pounds. An allowance of five pounds is 3 given those which have not won 5,000 and 1 seven pounds is conceded horses which have s not won ,000 at any time. Maidens, if never r placed in a sweepstake, will be allowed ten 1 pounds, which will make them carry 116 6 pounds in the stake. In framing the conditions, racing secretary T Joseph McLennan was of the opinion that 1 by inserting the allowance clauses, the horses s of demonstrated ability should shoulder a 1 heavier impost than those with less brilliant 1 performances as three-year-olds, and thereby f insure keener competition in the race.
