TRAINER OF MARTIMAS TORONTO, Ont, May 22.— Edward Whyte, clerk of the scales at Woodbine, will be remembered by oldtimers as the trainer of Martimas, the only Canadian-owned horse that ever won a Futurity, scoring in that historic classic in 1898, under the colors of William Hendrie, father of George M. Hen-drie, one of the stewards at Woodbine, and grandfather of Judge W. B. Hendrie, also officiating in the judges pagoda at the Ontario Jockey Club course. Martimas was purchased as a yearling for 30 at Sheepshead Bay, from the breeders, Enright and Jennings. Martimas triumph came only after an hour and forty minute post delay. He was ridden by the late Harry Lewis, who, incidentally, is the only rider that ever scored a triple in the Kings Plate. Martimas next appearance was in the seven furlongs of the Flatbush Handicap, at Sheepshead Bay, which he won by six lengths, only to be disqualified, and many of the old-timers who witnessed the race are still wondering why.
