BELMONT PARK NOTES $ $; NEW YORK, N. Y., May 22. William Garth, the veteran Virginia sportsman, reports that he has nine foals at his farm so far and that he has selected several sires to breed to this season. A. J. Joyner reported slight coughing among the two-year-olds he has for C. D. Widener. Jolly Roger, champion of the Greentree Stable, will be a sure starter in the Charles L. Appleton Memorial Steeplechase, to be run Saturday. This big son of Pennant, schooled two turns of the Belmont field brilliantly yesterday morning in preparation for the running and he is fit. He was the winner of the 1927 running, but was beaten last year by Thomas Hitchcocks Bangle. P. Unger claimed Tackle from the Rancocas stable out of the first race for ,500. Herodian, a member of the W. R. Coe stable, which has been on the ailing list for some time, is rounding to rapidly. H. T. Archibald, Chicago owner, was on hand to witness Mantonians victory in the steeplechase. Ben Snow, veteran commissioner, returned to action after a period of illness. Trainer Preston Burch hobbled about with the aid of a cane. He is suffering a painful case of water on the knee.
