OUTSTANDING UPSET I ♦ Shanty McCartys Unexpected I Victory Feature at Aurora. » — — Off-Day Program Provides Good 1 Sport, While Feminine Fans Help Swell Attendance. • AURORA, 111., May 24.— Another feature- less card was decided at Exposition Park this afternoon, there being no special race arranged, and there was an absence of any particular racing stars. The seven races down for decision brought out small fields owing to the adverse track conditions, but well-matched bands vied for honors in all of the contests, resulting in closely contested and highly exciting sport. The setting aside of the day as Ladies Day served to swell the attendance considerably, and one of the largest crowds of the present meeting made the trip out to the course. Speculation in all of the contests was heavy and the majority of the winners carried considerable support. Some surprises occurred, but the outstanding occurrence was the unexpected victory of Mrs. J. Sharps lightly backed Shanty McCarty, the winner of the second race. Thursday nights hard rain left the track In a heavy condition and it was with great difficulty that most of the racers negotiated the difficult going. SOX OF MAN O WAR. The four-year-old colt Field Marshal, son of Man o War, took kindly to the exacting going and was returned the winner over the small field of starters which matched strides in the introductory dash of five and a half furlongs. Ridden by apprentice W. Castle, the winner raced with the leaders, Veneita M. and Laddie Buck, to the stretch turn, then coming gamely on the inside raced them into defeat, forging to the front at the head of the stretch and, much the best, gradually drew away into a long lead, winning in a canter. Secrecy, after racing wide on the turns and losing ground, proceeded to close up much ground in the stretch, getting up for second place. The tiring Veneita M. just lasted to be third. Secrecy was the favorite. In the second race, a division of the first, also at five and a half furlongs, Shanty McCarty furnished an immense surprise, winning at long odds, when he took the measure of Ritter, Ethel Sherlock and six other good sprinters. Ridden by M. Wimmer, the winner came from the rear of the leaders rapidly in the final three-sixteenths and, gaining ground steadily, managed to get up at the finish to wear down Ritter, defeating the latter by a half length. Ritter moved to the front entering the stretch, taking the lead from the tiring Miss Lester, and, though holding on well, was unable to stall off Shanty McCarty. Ethel Sherlock, a forward factor from the start, held on well and secured third place. Ritter was backed into strong favoritism. FOXY SETH EASILY. It was an easy matter for Foxy Seth, overwhelming favorite for the third race, to vanquish the small band of youngsters which ventured out over four and a half furlongs. Ridden by Deprema, the Jones Stock Farm racer made every post a winning one, finishing eight lengths in advance of The Coach. The Coach held second place safe at the end, having passed by Star Mistress inside the last eighth. Star Mistress raced in closest pursuit of Foxy Seth, could not threaten the leader and in the final drive tired, succumbing to The Coach, but saving third place. Pandy. racing one mile and seventy yards in the fourth race, to be winner in advance of Open Go Shut, Shampoo and the four other starters, was one that showed great liking for the going and earned her first purse of the meeting, making amends for her poor showing in her previous races. Jockey R. Ayraud rode the six-year-old Johren mare energetically throughout, and after racing Starless into defeat near the far turn, Pandy then moved into the lead, which she managed to retain to the finish. Open Go Shut gained ground rapidly in the final three-sixteenths, getting up to vanquish Shampoo for second place, the latter tiring quickly in the final seventy yards. Common Gold, the favorite, made an effort to reach the leaders at the head of the stretch but was not good enough and tired badly. The Jones Stock Farm, represented in the third race by Foxy Seth, claimed J. J. Greeleys fir t-time starter Star Mistress at a cost of ,400. Open Go Shut was claimed out of the fourth race from H. Kehres, by the Arsonia Stable for ,200. • i
