REPEATS CUP V1C10RY Richard T. Wilsons Sunt ire Duplicates 1928 Performance. • Sir Harry Second and Son o Battle Third in Toronto Handicap — Display Finished Unplaced. » TORONTO. Ont.. May 24.— Richard T. Wilsons Sunfire, a son of Olambala, came back at Woodbine Park this afternoon to duplicate his victory of last year in the running of the Toronto Cup, one of Canadas famous races. Ridden by R. Leonard and coupled with W. J. Salmons Display as an entry, Sunfire went to the post an odds-on favorite. There were seven starters, Sun Forward and Gaffsman being withdrawn. Display was on his usual bad behavior at the post and was responsible for a delay of ten minutes. Starter Cassidy used great patience and finally got an excellent start, the field being dispatched in a compact bunch. Mann, who evidently had orders to go to the front and make every post a winning one, sent Brown Wizard up with a rush in the run to the first turn and on the back stretch drew away into a three lengths lead. Son o" Battle and Royal Stranger followed. Sortie was fourth, closer up than usual, and Sunfire was fifth. Leonard was sitting still on the latter and he waited until after they passed the half mile post before making an effort. On the far turn Sunfire began moving up on the leaders and. entering the stretch, came to the outside to take command at the eighth post. From there to the finish it was only a good gallop for the Wilson horse and at the end he had a lead of five lengths over Sir Harry. The latter beat Son o Battle by two lengths and a half for second place. Royal Stranger was fourth. Display, never dangerous, failed to respond with his usual stretch run when called on and evidently is not the horse he was a couple of years ago. The running of the race was marked by a terrific pace as the fractional time shows : :23%, :47%, 1:12%. 1:38%, 1:51%. This was within one-fifth of a second of the track record for the distance. The net value to the winner was 2,720. VICTORIA TO SNOWY. Snowy, the compactly built little filly by Tryster that races for Walter J. Salmon, scored a well-earned victory in the running of the ,000 added Victoria Stakes, when she beat the Seagram Stables Bachelor Skipper by a length. The winner was ridden by L. Schaefer, made all of her own pace and held Bachelor Skipper safe all through the stretch run. Snowy was lucky in breaking rapidly, while Bachelor Skipper left slowly. The Seagram youngster was inclined to be fractious at the post and when the barri?r was sprung he broke sideways. Maiben took something out of him in rushing him up on the outside to get to the pacemaker. At the head of the home stretch he was on almost even terms with Snowy, but w-hen he tired under punishment in the last eighib swerved to the inside in behind the leader. Wrackell. running in improved form, finished third, beaten a length and a half for the place. With better luck at the start Bachelor Skipper might have won. Cliftons Lass developed a fever and was withdrawn from the first race, which left six to start. Vacillate looked to be in a soft spot and, well-backed, she went to the post an odds-on favorite. W. Curran had the mount and when the start came, lost no time in getting to the front, and before they had gone an eighth, he opened up a lead of six lengths. On the far turn he took Vacillate under restraint, and for the remainder of the journey the filly raced under slight restraint. At the finish she had a margin of four lengths to spare over Prancing, which in turn beat Florazetta three lengths for second place. WOODBINE STEEPLECHASE. The Woodbine Steeplechase, a handicap over the two miles and a half course, furnished a stirring contest in which the Eastland Farms Stables pair, Brucourt and Malvoisine, fought it out all the last quarter to finish noses apart in the order named. Five lengths back followed W. J. Salmons Gun Boat and another length back came the Dorwood Stables Rubigny. There were c:x starters and Rubigny was a well backed favorite. When the start came Collins sent the French mare Malvoisine into a long lead and the first time around she opened up a gap of fifteen lengths on her opponents. The remainder were racing in hand going to the fifteenth jump. Duller was driving Rubigny and the latter failed to respond. Malvoisine had a three lengths lead at this stage and her stable companion Brucourt was second. Gun Boat, which had been racing well in hand, also moved up and for a time it looked as if the latter could take the lead whenever his rider elected to do so. Malvoisine, however, still had something in reserve. Going to the last jump she began tiring and Brucourt, c.osing gamely, caught her in the last fifty yards to win in the final strides by the shortest of margins. Gun Boat made a bad landing at the last jump, where he went to his knees and all but unseated his jockey. But for this he would have been closer up at the end. Duller, rode a desperate race on Rubigny, but to no avail. The Dorw- d racer appeared to sulk right at the end. He, came again and was wearing Gun Boat down. Datura lost his rider at the seventeenth jump and the other five starters finished. Dance Circle came from a long way back to win the fourth race, the conditions of which were for maiden three-year-olds and over, foaled in Canada. Beginning none too well, Dance Circle was buffeted about on the first turn and dropped back to seventh place. McGinnis did not hurry her and gave the filly an opportunity of getting settled in her •tride. When he called on Dance Circle making the turn into the stretch, the Seagram filly responded with a splendid effort and, in the final eighth, wore down the tiring pacemaker. Kauri, to get up in the last fifty yards to win by a length. Two lengths and a half back of Kauri finished Silver Wedding, and then came Sabana. i I I 1 ,
