i 0,000 Grainger Memorial Handicap Attracts Array of Stars » • Clyde Van Dusen, Toro, Jock, Easter Stockings, Car-tago, Royal Julian and Broadside Among the Overnight Eligibles for Churchill Downs Feature « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 24. — Clyde Van Dusen, the little gelding which raced to fame and victory in last Saturdays fifty-fifth Kentucky Derby, will reach out for additional honors when he opposes such crack older horses as Toro, Jock, Car-tago, I Easter Stockings, Royal Julian and others in the Grainger Memorial Handicap. I The race will mark Clyde Van Dusens first appearance since his Derby victory. 1 It is a contest that promises to result in one of the most stirring turf battles , ever staged and is certain to bring to Churchill Downs one of the largest crowds, Derby days excluded, in the long history of the track. Clyde Van Dusen, trainer of the Man o War gelding bearing his name, surprised by naming the H. P. Gardner gelding for Saturdays race. He declared the • three-year-old a positive starter and that this meeting with older company probably will be his last appearance before he fills his engagement in the 0,000 added American Derby at Washington Park. He will not be sent to Fairmount Park for the Fair-mount Derby, a week hence. Van Dusen said. The diminutive gelding on several occasions has become distressed travelling from one point to another, and his trainer proposes to limit his travels to a minimum. After going to Washington Park, from here, the gelding will have two weeks before going to the post in the American Derby, and trainer Van Dusen figures H he should happen to ship poorly, there will be sufficient time for him to recover so as to be in trim for the Washington Park race. He probably will go to Latonia for the running of the Latonia Derby on June 22. Only three three-year-olds have been successful in the Grainger Memorial, which from the years 1893 to 1923, inclusive, was the Kentucky Handicap. Luke McLuke, the first of that age to win, scored under 100 pounds in 1914. Ten years later E. B. McLeans Modest won the stake, carrying 101 pounds, and the following year 1925 J. J. Troxlers King Nadi triumphed under 102 pounds. Todays weather offered a chance that Saturdays race will be decided under perfect conditions. , — «
